Psat question.

Should you take it in sophmore year or junior year.

If you take it in junior year you qualify for the National Merit Scholarship thing.

OOps, sorry I didnt see that.

The year to definitely take it is junior year. Taking the psat in sophomore year is optional, more like getting a feel of what it's like, but if you get a good score it won't count for merit (only junior year counts).

Thanks! Ill definetly(sp?) do it in Junior year though. But SATS and PSATS in the same year? Thats weird.

Well, my school takes it junior year, instead of having us take both the SAT and PSAT in the same year.

Well, the SAT you can usually take it whenever you want because there's a broad range of test dates. Taking the PSAT and SAT in the same year is pretty common, as junior year is one of the most important years in high school. The test material is quite similar between the two tests so it's not exactly tough to study for both at the same time.

Oh okay thanks.. You guys are really helpfull.

At my high school it's free for Juniors and Sophomores so both take it. Actually, I heard a rumor that my school district is paying for Freshman soon too, which means seniors will be the only ones in school. Go seniors! Free day, possibly even a day off!

Our school district has it for freshman, sophomores, juniors, and even some 8th graders.

I really regret not taking it sophomore year.
It's just so much better to have an idea of what to work on and what to expect for the year it actually counts.
If I took it sophomore year, and actually studied for it I would have had a really good chance at national merit semifinalist.

But if you take it in sophomore year you dont meet the standards for national merit semifinalist.

This really isnt that confusing.

You take the PSAT usually in October.People take PSAT sophomore year for practice. They take it junior year to qualify for a commendation (3%) or to be semifinalist (1%).

The SAT is taken usually spring of junior year and again in the fall.

Also, you can take ACT if you suck at the SAT. One of these two exams (ACT & SAT) are required for admission to most colleges. Also, you have to usually take SAT II exams - these are subject tests. you can take them whenever, but usually at the end of the school year is wisest.

All caught up, Tymel?

But I think that the point of taking it sophmore year is so that the students know where they stand and they're able to start thinking more about SATs and studying more in general.

Yeah thanks greendayfan. Everything is really clear now. =]

can you take it as a freshman?

you can take it as a freshman, but it's really not necessary and most do not.

would you advise that i do so..?

not really. it only counts junior year, so if you take it sophomore year you'll be able to evaluate what you need to work on and how to improve your score. And also a lot of the subject matter on the exam wont be learned until you've completed freshman year. And then...why spend the money when you dont need to?
