PSAT Questions Discussion

Hi, just took the PSAT test today and I remember some questions that I did not understand.
(Math Section 1)
1- How many Positive integers less than 1000 don't have 7 in any digit.

2-Points A,B and X Dont all lie on the same line. Point X is 5 away from A and 3 away from B. How many other points in the same plane as A,B, and X are also 5 Units from A and 3 units from B.

a) None
b) One
c) Two
d) Three
e) Four
(Math Section 2)
(these are supposed to be gridded)
3-The total cost of 8 hats and 5 scarves is the same as the cost of 5 hats and 7 scarves. The cost of each scarf is "d" times the cost of each hat. What is the value of "d."

4- In the XY plane the line with the Equation AX+BY=1. Where A and B are constants intersects the Y axis where Y=2 (i think). What is the value of B.

I really hate having questions in my head which are unsolved.

If you can give the answers, thanks.

PlanetFruitcake
:)

are you allowed to talk about the questions already? anyway those were relatively simple, i hope i got a 80 on M (CR, not so much lol)

1 was b. dont know exact number. 728 maybe?
basically for every group of 100 numbers (except 601-700), there were 19 numbers with 7 in them. 1000-19*8-20-100= 728

2 was 1.
think of a kite or a diamond…

3 is 1.5

4 is 1/2

raped the math (unless i made careless errors, whihc is quite possible given my luck) and did pretty well on cr + w. expecting 80 m, 70s in CR and W, hopefully semifinalist

Every 100 interval except for 700-799, there are 19 numbers with 7.
Answer: 729 (1000-19*9-100)

One (Draw two circles of radius 5 and 3 around X and Y as centers respectively.)
3 and 4. Simple algebra, Pi Face got the answers above.

729? I got 728…plus I dont think 729 was even one of the answers…
weird. too lazy to do it out myself tho >.>

meh. here we go.
1-100 = 19 numbers w/ 7
101-200 = 19
201-300=19
301-400 = 19
401-500= 19
501-601= 19
601-700=20
701-800= 99
801- 900= 19
901-1000=19

got 271. 1000-271= 729?

lolwut?

728 was an answer tho, 729 wasnt

I see, 1000 is not less than 1000, so 728 is correct.
Basically, there are 999 positive integers less than 1000.
So 999-271 = 728.

oh. duh. cant believe I overlooked that. I was scared for a second lol

^same thing that tricked a lot of people on the october sat, especially becuz it was a fill-in… hehe tricky collegeboard

ARGH I got the question dealing with averages and degrees in a circle wrong. I can’t remember the exact question now, but the answer was supposed to be 60 degrees. I put 90.

There go 4 points… just like that, down the drain.

Thanks guys Anyway I got 3 of those four right according to you (i hope).
Got 1, 3 and 4 right. Every other math question was easy.
I know I got at least a 78 in Math. Not so sure about CR.

That was easy… don’t remember what it was but it took me like 30 seconds.

^ Yeah, I heard from some friends afterwards that they found that particular question easy, although I still have no idea why the answer was 60. I need to ask. I knew 90 probably wasn’t correct, but I ran out of time at the end and couldn’t go back to think about it.

Otherwise, I’m pretty sure I got everything else right.

90 was definitely wrong just cant remember, really bad memory…

I legitimately think I missed only 1 math question which I omitted because I kept getting the wrong aswer which was the digits of 1000 wrong. So what is that like a 76 or something? Reading was okay, I omitted 2 or 3 vocab questions because the odds of me getting those right were slim. Then I’m pretty sure I got 2 or 3 wrong that’s probably like a 68 or something. Writing I effed up and probably got around 62 maybe worse. I just couldn’t stay focused at all. Overall, CR was what I expected. Math was insanely easy. And writing was much harder than what I had practiced (though I think that in part comes from having that section always at the end).

I think that the CR and Math was easy, and the Writing wasnt that hard. There were mostly really easy, but some were confusing…

btw, when do the scores come??

I don’t think they come until around mid december? There was one question that involved like two sets of parallel lines plus a transversal or something and you had to say the degree measurement of “x.” I know that was supposed to be an easy question but I never took geometry so I’m wondering if anyone knows the answer.

@raiderade: 110…im pretty sure. 90%? i kinda rushed by it

does the idiom go
“an explanation OF a phenomenon” or
“an explanation FOR a phenomenon”?

^I had the same question. I ended up saying it was an error, but I’m not too sure.

Rats about the 110 degree thing. For some reason I just assumed it was whatever the angle above it was. Looks like I got 2 wrong now.
