PSAT results

There’s certain techiniques that you can either learn from a lot of critical reading in school (AP Lang has improved my CR skills a lot) or by learning them in an SAT prep book. Most average kids can get the questions that ask “what” but not “why”. You have to read with the why in mind.

cr section tips: listen to me because i got a 78 in that section, so i know what i’m talking about. (one omit, so technically i didn’t get any wrong.)

vocabulary- read alot. lookout for contest clues, these are your guides. LEARN PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES. learning huge lists is just alot of work and not worth it b/c vocab makes up maybe 10 questions in the whole test. study smart, people.

lookout for clues like" she was a melancholy, __________ person." the blank will be a word that means melancholy, or has a definition close to it.

"she was usually melancholy, but in class she was _________."now the word in the blank will be the opposite of melancholy.

try this: read the sentence while covering the answers with your hand. then fill in the blanks with what you think the answers could be. now lift your hand and find words that match.

use process of elimination… huge help when you aren’t positive about words.

reading passages

underline stuff that sounds important. or better yet, look at the questions for the passage BEFORE you read it. when you’re ansering questions, be sure to find quotes in the text that directly prove your answer and write the question numbver next to the quote. if you can’t find quote evidence, the answer you chose is probably wrong.

I suggest just reading. I don’t just read classics, (in fact I don’t like most of them) I just read a lot in general. You start at small stuff, like Gossip Girl, and advance all the way to Anna Karenina. Don’t waste time trying to figure out strategies. The only strategy is to be able to read fast so you can read the passages twice or even three times.

P.S.- 79 on CR

hey, i’m just saying what worked for me. i’m a fast reader too, but when i was making a 66 in cr last year, that didn’t help me. technique and strategy helps with focus.

note- she took the tst on wednesday, so despite the one point bump she got, my score and my advice are equal to hers. ;-)

i got a 227. lowest for 99 percentile for NY that i noe of is 218. my entire school got above 90 percentile. i feel kinda …

Duuuuuur 216. Lots of stupid mistakes. :/

Soph with no prep: 214! :D

Which is probably low by CC standards, but I’m happy with it. From experience, how much do PSAT scores go up from soph to junior year? I’m going for National Merit next year so I was wondering if I’ll get much of a natural score increase. Obviously I’ll prep next year, but I really don’t feel like taking a course ($$$).

loh3x7a, My score went up 30 points from soph year to junior year. I did do some prep though.

freakin crazy scores…

I got a 79…I read a lot, stuff somewhere in the middle between ultra-light Gossip Girl and hard-core Wuthering Hieghts…I also found that the Barron’s 2400 book was a god-send and is basically the technique inconspic used…

I got a 231 as a sophomore without prep. Yay!
