PSAT Score 186.. Is that a good score for a Sophomore?

I didn't study. That was the big thing. Is that a good thing for a Sophomore whose number one is Pitzer? Do you think it's possible to bring it up for the National Merit Scholarship?

Thank you so much!

Good job! I’m a sophomore too, but a 186 is a really good score, well above average. With some studying/prep, you could probably bring it up into National Merit range.

It’s doable but depends on what section needs the improvement- one of our guaranteed NMSF that made 220 this year made 189 last year without prep. He just needed to boost math and writing which I helped him with(he made a 80 CR last year, avid reader).

Same for this 214, who made a 176 last year. He just took the SAT prep class our school offered us and pulled it off.

Yes. I only got 180 as a junior. You have plenty of time to practice the SAT before junior year.

Definitely. I scored lower than that in my sophomore year for the PSAT. I didn’t prep at all.
After eight months of fooling around, I later prepped for the SAT for 2 solid months & improved to a National Merit PSAT score this year (unless there’s a drastic increase this year for the cutoff), and had an SAT score very close to it.
