PSAT Score - 520 pt increase!

Hello, I am new to the College Confidential forums. I just thought I would get some opinions about a question I had. Well, last year in tenth grade I took the PSAT and received an overall 1320, 410 CR, 410 M, 500 W. I was really angry that I scored so low (that was the 39th percentile) and decided it was time to start studying for the PSAT/SAT. Yesterday I got my results for the eleventh grade PSAT back and to my surprise, I received a 630 CR, 480 M, 730 W, which puts me in the 90th percentile.
Now, I know that I still really need to bring my critical reading score up for tougher colleges, but my question is this: Has anybody on here ever brought up their math score by at least 200 points? I'll probably be taking the SAT in March and want to know if I can even bring up my math score by that much, hopefully to around 700. Thanks for any advice!

You are a wonderful testament to hard work and determination. I think you can certainly bring up your Math score with private good quality SAT tutoring. How much of an increase is a mystery, depending on your inherent math ability and the effort you put into it. I had heard PSAT results wouldnt get sent until December? Are they all out? We are in New York. Where are you?

I'm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They told us December as well but I guess they got them in early so they handed them out yesterday. Thanks for the kind words :)

Not to take away your fine achievement, but I also think this really shows that the PSAT is intended for juniors, not sophomores.

While you're probably correct, several of my friends scored about an 1850 last year in tenth grade so I really just blame my school for not preparing me at all. It was seriously the easiest school where we did no work so I switched to a prestigious, college-prep HS and since then, my abilities have really picked up, especially in math (which my PSAT score doesn't reflect.)

You could bring up your math score as much as you want to by practicing with the real SAT math questions in the Blue Book

Amazon.com: The Official SAT Study Guide: The College Board: Books

and asking your teachers and your local librarian for interesting books about high-school-level math to borrow and practice with.

hey! i also had a 52(0) pt. increase from my soph to junior year (170 > 222). I'm a senior now though...

anyways, congrats.

grats dude :]
with practice anything is possible.

For me,
1610 PSAT -> 1880 PSAT -> 1880 SAT -> 2770 SAT
660 pt increase in 2 years. not bad :P

wow timmy. 2770 SAT?
i guess you're so smart, a perfect score isn't
good enough for you; you get 370 pts extra credit on the SAT exam

=p

i'm smart? that's an overstatement.
where did the 370 come from?

^How in the world did u score a 2770???

370 points = 2770 - 2400

Hahaha. 2770.

I think this one girl from my school actually got a 2800 flat. I'm not sure though.

I have a 4590.

It seems that your change in schools was an important factor in your success. Great job!

lol he obviously meant 2270.
