PSAT Scores and Qualification for NMS

So just got my 2010 PSAT scores back today. I'm a junior btw, lol. Anyway, was wondering if I qualify for the NMS or the National Achievement Scholarship (NMS for Blacks)

CR: 68
Math: 80
Writing: 64
Total: 212
Percentile: 98*

*I've heard the only way you can qualify is if you're in the 99th percentile, is that true?

PS: I hate the PSAT, lol, I preferred the SAT, i got a 2250 on that, should've gotten a 225 on this :(( lol

Sorry, I mainly want to know if I’m commended. Not sure if qualifying and being commended are the same.

Well, it really depends on what state you are in. You will definitely be commended, and you may or may not be a semi-finalist based on what state you are in. You will definitely be a National Achievement Semi-finalist.

What state are you in? I think some of the lower score end states are 210-13 but you most likely didnt make finalist :frowning: you wont know till they release official state rankings though

^Not true Flaming, whether or not Myles is a National Merit Semi-finalist depends on the state cut-off. NASF depends on the regional cut-off for African-Americans only. You’ll most probably at least be National Merit Commended. You have to tell us what state you are from to help you predict if you made NMSF. Once you make semi-finalist, it is actually pretty easy to make finalist.

At MilesW, how many did you miss per section? Can you enlighten me as to what the scale/curve is?

I’m from Texas, so…?

It looks like the Texas cut off last year was 215. It would be unusual for it to change by three points, but there’s no way of knowing for sure right now. With a 212, you may have just missed it by a couple points. You’re definitely commended, and you’ve got an awesome SAT score! The PSAT is just one little niche in the world of measuring people, and it’s true there are some scholarships at some colleges that are pretty big for NMF, but other than those specific scholarships, PSAT scores won’t affect anything else at all. i lifted the following from another thread - it explains it well:

As the PSAT results come in, here are last years cut-offs by state. The general rule is that they are usually within 1 or 2 plus or minus each year, but that is no guarantee.

To be commended last year, you needed a score of 201. That’s fairly typical, but it can be plus or minus one.

Once a student is a semi-finalist, they have to get a qualifying (or have gotten a qualifying score) on the SAT. From what I have read, the way that is calculated is by taking Math plus RC plus the raw multiple choice score for writing times 10 as there is no essay score for PSAT. Total those up and you get the total SAT the NMSQT considers. For the past few years, the qualifying score tends to be 1960. If the semi-finalist gets that score, and has good grades, they typically make finalist.

Damn it, if i’d gotten semi-finalist, i could’ve gotten finalist, cause i have a 4.0 and got a higher score on the SAT than i did for PSAT :(

Myles…you will make National Achievement.
