PSAT Scores and their Translation

So, I'm a freshman in high school. I'm fairly advanced for my age, so it was recommended that I take the PSAT's to see where I stand in comparison to others. I scored a 199. I was pretty psyched, and proceeded to look up what that meant for me. I found this conversion chart, (<a href="http://www.medina-esc.org/Downloads/SAT-ACT-PSAT%20Conversion%20Chart.pdf">http://www.medina-esc.org/Downloads/SAT-ACT-PSAT%20Conversion%20Chart.pdf</a>) and it says I would have gotten near 2000 on an SAT, but I wanted a second opinion. Is a 199 good, or at least above average, especially for a freshman?

199 is definitely above average.

It is very good. With additional time in school and more math under your belt, you should do nicely next year. Congratulations.

Thanks! I was pretty happy, but I wanted to see what my score translated to in real-world terms. Sometimes seeing the score on paper is more exciting than realizing you scored an 83%.

Just a side note: 83% is pretty darn good in college, depending on your major and school. The average on my recent algorithms final was 55%. Get ready to be constantly disappointed.

Anyway, my first SAT score was almost exactly 10x my junior year PSAT score (216 vs 2150), so I would say your score was probably accurate–although I did not really prepare for my first SAT at all until the night before. I did a huge amount of preparation for my next SAT and did a lot better.

Thanks for the input! Nice scores by the way. I’m not as concerned as most people because I am still a freshman. I have time to improve, but I find it interesting that you did that good without studying often. I do the exact same thing sometimes. I need to kick the habit!

I think it’s pretty hard to predict junior/senior SAT scores from a freshman PSAT. For what it’s worth I got somewhere around 190 my freshman year and I ended up with 2300 this year as a senior. As long as you take rigorous classes and maybe do a little prep junior year I think you’ll be fine. :)
