PSAT Scores Class of 2012

I have been having a super pressing desire to know some PSAT scores for people in the high school class of 2012 (rising 11th).

This desire arose from the fact that in my opinion, I made less than average marks. However, my percentiles were freakishly higher than I expected considering how low my scores were.

My scores were:

**(Please note that the percentiles compare me to other tenth graders [high school class of 2012].)

65(0) in Critical Reading [97th percentile Nationally]
61(0) in Mathematics [93rd percentile Nationally]
61(0) in Writing Skills [95th percentile Nationally]

For a Grand Total of 187(0) [92nd percentile]

For some reason, this particular percentile is in comparison to the class of 2011 [high school juniors.]

Honestly, I don't see how I could score in the 90th percentile with such a seemingly mediocre score (from what I've seen on this forum)

Class of 2012, if you are comfortable with this, please post your PSAT scores and percentiles. Although I really don't want this to be a mistake, I really need to know exactly where I stand. I find this score report superduper weird.

Thanks.

69 in Critical Reading [98th percentile Nationally]
80 in Mathematics [99th+ percentile Nationally]
51 in Writing Skills [81st percentile Nationally]
For a Grand Total of 200(0) [97th percentile]

The average people on on this forum score much higher than the national average. Most of the students on CC are highly motivated and intelligent.

Your score is not that mediocre, 1500 is avg. o_o

Whoa. I had the same exact score last year (187) but it was 91st percentile. My friend that got 191 was in the 95th percentile. I think 99th percentile is around 210. o_o

CC is made up the super duper smart kids. But everywhere else, kids aren’t that smart :stuck_out_tongue:

1,545,856 juniors took the PSAT in 2009 so if you did better than 92%, 8% still did better than you which is about 123668 juniors. They’ll all be applying to the most selective colleges as well. :O

Thanks so much for the answer!!
All I’m confused about is how an 80 is the 99th percentile but a 65 is in the 97th.
Yes I understand that 2 percent is ALOT of people because many took the exam; however, i don’t understand how the range of 2 percent is 15 entire points…
Oh well, I guess I’m not really used to this scene.

Another quick question:
Does anyone know if these scores/percentiles are average or if the test was just particularly difficult this year? OR if the group that I’m being compared to [class of 2012] are just kinda weak compared to the classes before them?

Thanks

I’ve taken 2 practice, official PSATs and have gotten 216 on both. I’m also a rising Junior.

Way to make me feel like steaming crap. Ha. But seriously, congrats!
And uh, if you remember, message me when you get your results for junior year.
I want to know if i can catch up. I’m planning on at least a 30(0) point increase so… yeah! :]

Umm, I made a 189 as a freshman, and a 218 (70 CR, 78 M, 70 W) as a sophomore. I think that was 99% for all sections for my sophomore score.

You have a good chance at making a 30 point increase just because you’re a year older and a year smarter. The increase I made (29 points) was done with no studying except for an official practice test (in the CB booklet) the night before the test.

Im a rising junior, hardly even heard of the PSAT (go to a school that has their main focus on the ACT), but I want to take it. How would I go about studying it, since I have about 4 months left to study?

Haha ok, I’ll message you if I remember. Good luck with your preparation!

PSAT’s actaully dont even mean crap, unless you’re trying to get a merit scholarship than they in no way predict your SAT score. I got a 1500 freshmean year, 17 something sophmore year, and only 1870 jr year, then i actaully worked and prepared for the SAT and i got a 2150 my first time (march, jr year), im projecting 2230-2300 for the june one i just took. Just saying dont rely on it, you can do better or worse.

^Yes, I’m not using my PSAT scores as an indicator for my SAT scores. I’m just improving them for NMSF. While I usually get between 2220-2270 on practice SATs, I’ve only gotten 216 on my last 2 practice PSATs.

Yeah, I really want NMS. So I’m going to have to work super duper hard because that 187 isn’t going to cut it.

“Haha ok, I’ll message you if I remember. Good luck with your preparation!”

Allright! Its on! Don’t think I’ll forget either!

"Im a rising junior, hardly even heard of the PSAT (go to a school that has their main focus on the ACT), but I want to take it. How would I go about studying it, since I have about 4 months left to study? "

I would just study the SAT…

I scored a 197 on both my Freshman AND Sophomore PSAT’s. I don’t think that’s good. But I feel like I’ve learned A LOT more this year (versus almost nothing between fresh and soph years), so I’m not too worried about it. I’m aiming for 220 this year  I’ll probably be taking the SAT in October too. And I guess I’ll be studying with the CB book this summer.

150-160 something frosh year
189 sophomore year

LETS WAIT FOR JUNIOR YEAR SCORES!!!

Yup! I’ll be taking the SAT in October too.
Unfortunately… It’s on my birthday this year =(
and YES! I’m so hyped for this competition!

Going for NMS also, but I have the misfortune of living in New Jersey (although our school system may not be so great after a few years of Chris Christie), so the cutoff is 220-221. Got a 220 this year, and I for one am afraid of losing points! The scores seem so volatile beyond the 210 mark.

Scores and percentiles for me:

Selection Index - 220 (99*)
Math - 69 (99)
Critical Reading - 76 (99)
Writing - 75 (99)

*Compared with juniors; rest with Sophomores.

^I wish I had your CR score. That’s almost always the lowest for me…

B/c PPL r stupid. but dont get ur hopes up, and don’t let ur ego get inflated. those scores are not outstanding, but they r good dont get me wrong. out of my grade at least 30% of the kids got above the 90th percentile. and all these types of kids will be applying to the same few colleges. so congrats, you outdid the kids that would be going to community or city colleges, but ur gonna have to get ur sat scores alot higher than 610 wtvr to get into rlly good schools.

-once again, im just being blunt-not scathing. it’s still a good score obviously.

@delmonico
Yeah, thanks, your post and other similar ones have really helped me put a perspective on things. I was really disappointed with my score once I got it, but I wasn’t all that surprised, I just kinda regretted that I didn’t take the test more seriously, but the percentiles surprised me… Yeah, now I kinda understand how that works.

Ya don’t worry it wasn’t scathing.

@somestudent2
Nice Scores!!! Congrats!

So…the PSAT is harder than the SAT? My corresponding scores from junior year SAT and PSAT had a 200 point discrepancy. I studied some SAT prep books for the PSAT and didn’t do any more preparation for the SAT…
