Does any know the cutoff score for NY. My college counselor told me that I got a letter, but I really think that it was a mistake because I did not score that high

Sophomore: 229 (75 W, 76 CR, 78 M)
Junior: 230 (73 W, 77 CR, 80 M)
SAT: 2360 (800 W, 800 CR, 760 M)

@xjackieo, what do you mean you got your letter today? Are semifinalist letters already being sent out?

Same letter for everyone that will receive at least a commendation. It also includes semi-finalist and finalist. That is not announced until September.

What are we supposed to do with that letter? Do we need to send our scores to colleges or something?

If you received a letter, NMSC will give your name/address/score to two colleges of your choice. You have to get back to them and designate the two colleges by the end of May. It is not all that crucial to do this, but it is an opportunity to demonstrate interest in a couple colleges. It is probably more strategic to notify colleges that give NM scholarships.

no…just the generic letter that everyone who will be at least commended gets…

I got a 212 in Texas, really annoying because the cutoff is usually around 215… which means I probably could have just answered 1 more problem correctly to get NMS… Oh well, mayb i’ll get lucky and my class turns out to be so dumb that it goes down a few points… I also got that letter in mid April saying that I’m either commended or nms

196 not even commended

Umm i got a 207 and i haven’t got ANY letter?!??!?!?

My son got a perfect 240 and didn’t get a letter, either. Was he supposed to? It doesn’t matter much because he’s a 3-year graduate and has already been accepted to Brown, having used his ACT score. Nevertheless, he was a junior when he took the test last semester and continues to get College Board emails about being sure to sign up for the SAT. So why no letter?

Lorem,

It doesn’t really matter if he’s already been accepted to a college that he’s definitely going to. The only thing that it could affect is- maybe Brown gives scholarships for semi-finalists? The letter basically says that you are either commended for a semi-finalist and that the semi-finalsts will be announced later this year. They also allow you to send your scores to 2 colleges of your choice to demonstrate your interest. I’m not sure if all the letters go out at the same time, but I would tell your son to ask his counselor. By the way congrats on a 240!

^^It seems like the letters go through the school’s counseling department before getting to you. So each school’s counseling department prioritizes differently; I have a 236 in CA and still haven’t gotten anything.

Oh great thanks

If you haven’t gotten it yet, ask at your school about your letter.

I got a 227 in Texas and “the letter” which is dated April 12, 2011 was mailed directly to me by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It did not come through my school.

229 I’m a sophomore you mad?

i got a 219 in NY, no idea what the cut off is, but that’s pretty good i think… haven’t gotten a letter about anything.

My friend got a 202 in Washington, and she got her letter a few days ago. I think that either 201 or 202 is the cutoff score for Commended scholars this year.

223 in California. No letter yet, but apparently it goes to the school first so we’ll see.

217 and got letter

I am in SoCal
