had migraine on psat, didnt on sat, no migraines ftw

So, what is the deal with the letter? Is there any strategy for picking 2 colleges to report for the College Plans Reporting Services. I guess it doesn’t make any sense to pick colleges that give only need-based aid - is that correct? Should we only pick schools that might give merit aid? Anybody have any thoughts?

How to decide from the past year?

The letter isn’t for aid - it’s just to show colleges that, “Oh, here’s a student that did fairly well, and is interested in your school.” But to be honest, most colleges don’t even contact the kid back. They’re really sort of useless.

I got 73 CR, 80 math, 78 writing. 231 total.
As for the SAT, I got a 2290 first time around, 2400 second time.

I live in Texas and got a 216.
Is it true that the cutoff is normally 215? When do we definately find out the cutoff?

^September I think.

I got 212. In my defense, I was sorta high when I took the exam.

I got a 209; 98th percentile.
I was pretty happy overall, but I was disappointed with my math score; for one of the grid-ins I advised the man in the question to order 6.8 pizzas. I should have written 7!! That was the only one I got wrong, and it dropped me from an 80 to a 76.

227: 99th percentile
Math: 76
Writing: 80
CR: 71

1st choice: University of Chicago
2nd choice: WashU

Soph yr: 58 CR, 69 M, 56 W = 183 which is 90 percentile
Junior yr: 66 CR, 66 M, 73 W = 205 which is 97 percentile

I NEED HELP! Everybody! The cutoff for Michigan is usually about 208 and I got 211…I should be in the running right??? Well, I never got a letter! However, I switched school’s around December, right after I took the PSAT so I think my letter may have gotten sent to the old school. What should I do? Or do I not get a letter? Are me scores too low? I’m really worried!

Actually, sorry for the freakout…I called National Merit and they said my school just didn’t give me the letter (because they’re lame) but I am in the running and I got to pick my two schools over the phone. Yale and Duke They said the website is closed so ANYONE who hasn’t yet received a letter needs to call NM immediately at 847-866-5100. They can take care of it right there and it only takes about 5 minutes. The staff was really nice!

picking yale and duke is bad idea. these schools don’t care about nmf. pick schools that do in terms of scholarships and fee-waivers etc.

Agree with above. Best to put “undecided” at this point. Change it later.

PSAT: 240, had to take it on my birthday.
SAT: 2350

Sent from my SGH-T959 using CC App

PSAT: 140ish (don’t remember exactly)

SAT: 2070 March
probably 2150+ in June.

S2 had 240 on PSAT and 2360 on SAT. I was able to talk him out of retaking SAT.

I know Yale and Duke are not necessarily concerned with national merit but they are my two top choice schools and I want to show as much interest ad possible. Most of my other schools don’t care about nmf either…I think?

Schools will not know if you are a finalist if you apply early. Students are nor notified of finalist standing till February, 2 months after early acceptance is released. They do have the chance to see if you are a Semifinalist, however. That comes out before September 30.
