PSAT Scores: Decent? Post yours

I took the test on October 13, 2010 as a sophomore and scored 67 CR, 60 Math (Bubbled some in wrong, but no excuses, I suppose), 64 WR. Are these scores any good? I see the percentages at the top of the score sheet, but I never trust those, I think they give false confidence.

So… Your total was 191… That’s really good. You have balanced scores, which is great.
My sophomore year, I got a 189 (68 CR, 58 M, 63 W). This year, I got a 212 (76 CR, 61 M, 75 W…Unofficially). And I didn’t study for either of them (I didn’t think I’d come anywhere near NMS territory, so…) As you can see, I dislike math. A lot. Your scores are fantastic… You should easily be able to pull at least a 210 next year.

Keep those math skills sharp. That really killed me this year. I got a 212, and my state’s NMS cutoff has hovered between 211-213. Great.

I got a 215 in Arizona (I’m a Junior). I took it last year and got 194. I just wanted to do better than last year’s score. I didn’t study for either, but I should make the cutoff.

^^Why would you feel the need to add the comment “I didn’t study for either?” It’s unnecessary and doesn’t prove you’re smarter at all.

ITA, salsapenguin. If I had a nickel for every time I heard that one… There’s a girl in one of my classes who got a 144 and was PROUD because she didn’t study and tooootally didn’t care. Quite frankly, I’d be way more impressed if you did study, people. That shows that you at least recognize that what you’re doing has bearing on your college admissions process and probably the rest of your life. Have fun with your student loans. :/

when did you guys get your score?

I got a 225 - and studied a lot. I also think I got a bit lucky. The cut off last year for me was 223 so I hope it doesn’t bump up 2 points. my breakdown was 78 writing, 73 math, 74 cr.

@Custardapple101: I haven’t actually received my paper report yet. I asked my school and they gave me the scores. Some states have received the scores in the mail, but some haven’t. People in NY and CA started receiving their scores about two weeks ago, although some won’t get their scores until mid-January. It all depends on how your school handles it.

What kind of studying helped the most? S is a soph and just got his scores. They were fine, but S was totally not happy with them. He will definitely put more study time in for next time he takes them. What did you find most helpful for getting PSAT scores up (esp CR and WR)?

^Doing practice tests written by CB and reviewing answers (especially wrong ones). Also, reading through the guides on CC are incredibly beneficial. Posting questions in the SAT forum and getting replies also helps.

Posting son’s scores - he is 10th grade - took “cold”

CR 72
M 61
W 75
total 208

Happy, but really needs to work on Math and bring up as his state’s NM for the last few years has been 221.

I was surprised comparing “score” to number wrong. Writing had 2 wrong and scored the 75. We learned a lot about the curve/scoring.

Son took the PSAT this year and scored 209-Very low on CR and W, though!

CR-66
M-80
W-63

220…and my state’s cutoff has so far been between 221 and 220. ■■■.

211 which is below cutoff for my state – but took the SAT a month later and got a 2270 – so suck it PSAT :P

I got a 222 in Michigan. Though somewhat disappointed (I really thought I nailed the Math section, but made two mistakes), I am happy to have made the cut-off and to have improved from my sophomore score of 201.

Only prep for the second one was the practice test, and looking over last year’s exam.

224 as sophomore. Breakdown was 69CR 80M 75W. To all those sophomores who took the PSAT and are trying to improve, one academic year makes a huge improvement. I got a 194 as a freshman but improved to a 224 with absolutely no prep. Don’t stress out too much.

Agree with asianese, got about a 200 sophomore year and pushed it up to a 236 (one math question wrong) junior. I took a practice test the night before but that was the only prep I did. Just do well in your normal classes, and if they’re decent, you’ll be fine.

175 Sophomore year —> 219 Junior year —> 2360 SAT Senior year

So yeah, improved a lot over the years.
