PSAT Scores for National Merit Semifinalists 2009 (H.S. Class of 2010)

quick question…so, if you receive a letter, does that mean you are at least a commended student? is it possible to get a letter and not be commended or semifinalist?

I live in CA…too much competition!!! =(

If you receive a letter, then you are at least commended.

A 223 in Texas will qualify you for semifinalist. To advance to finalist requires other things (application, good grades, comparable SAT scores, etc).

According to the reports here, a 201 should be sufficient for commended.

211 in PA
i’m grateful I won’t be a semi finalist
i didn’t take SATs and wont be…
glad i dont have a reason to now

lool i really dont think colleges care about PSAT scores unless the discrepancy btwn your PSAT and SAT is huuge, and woudl affect you negatively. ie, if you got a 240 on PSAT an like a 1500 on your SAT they might get suspicious of cheating, etc.
really tho, PSATs dont matter. unless you want $$$ from national merit :P

I live in Ga and got a 203 on my test. I got my letter from my school last week. Does anyone know when the minimum scores for each state will be out? I can find a list for last year but not this years.

sep te m ber

My daughter got the letter today from her counselor. We are from Illinois. She had a 217 on her PSAT. Last year’s cut off for semifinalists was a 214. Here’s hoping the scores don’t jump:)

When semifinalist letters are distributed in late August/early September, we’ll be able to compile a list of state cutoff scores. National Merit does not publicly publish the cutoff score list. After a certain point (their “official” notification date), you can call National Merit and ask what the cutoff for your state is.

good job man u r definitely semifinalist. the official letter for semifinalists arrive september (u’re supposed to find it out at that time, but obviously u made it). After that, u send in confirmation stuff to become finalist and u probably already know that (basically if u become semifinalist ur bound to be finalist)

What scores have gotten commended letters in MINNESOTA? Mine was 214.

Someone on CC reported commended score is 201 for this year. That’s a nationwide score. Your school probably has the letters and hasn’t handed them out yet.

Last year’s semi-finalist score for MN was 214. If it doesn’t go up you will be named a Semifinalist and you should get that letter from your school in September. Congratulations on your score.

My school said that the 11 who got the letters all scored over a 201.

I hope that helps. My son scored a 215, one point lower than NY cut-off last year. Hope there is a dip this year.

If you apply to a school Early Action, and you dont know if you are Commended, Semi or Finalist, how do they figure your scholarship package? Or do they adjust later after they get results?

You’ll be notified before EA/ED deadlines. Semifinalist notification is in late August/early September, commended notification is in late September/early October.

Does receiving one of these letters mean you will be at least commended?

Yes, if you received the letter you will be commended. Nothing else needs to be done for that honor. If your score is high enough to be named a semifinalist, you will receive a packet from your school in August/September that needs to be filled out. You’ll be notified in February if you hae made it to finalist.

Got mine, 219 in California. Because of my 59 in math. -_-

I was pretty confident that I’d make semi-finalists, but I’m not so sure anymore after looking at some of the obscene jumps. (ID, HI)

usually if your state has a high cut off it won’t jump as much
only the lower states have erratic jumps

219 in FL and still haven’t gotten it =[
