Does anyone know when psat scores will be back? Is it the same for every state? I'm in the 11th grade and this is the last psat score i get before the big SAT. I'm really anxious. So does anyone know?

Different for every school; they're normally received in mid-december, but whether they're handed out to students or not depends on when you have exams and holidays. Try asking your counselor.

Some of the guidance counselors have given scores out...Mine hasn't yet, though...Uggh...

My GC gave them out last wednesday.

Ours come out next week, right before the break.

Ours came in on Monday. I was first and got them today (I asked for it).

ebonyqueen15 how could your school not get them yet?
you're in Maryland and I'm in Tokyo...it doesn't make any sense

I just got mine today. Maybe the school just wants to hang on to them for some reason. I was mad about not getting it.

I think our school has gotten them, but Guidance takes forever to sort them out and distribute them. I wish we got ours earlier becuase I'm tired of waiting.

We don't get ours until after Christmas. I know because I have been pestering my counselor for the past two weeks about them.

I want mine nowwww!!

My ds got his yesterday :-)
He should easily make semi-finalist in Indiana (222!!!)
Does anyone know where the chart of the state cutoffs and the number of students that were commended/semi-finalists last year is? I copiedi it for my ds last year and now I can't find if.

here is the link to a previous discussion -- scroll down and you will see the past year's state cutoffs

by the way -- congrats on the great score. can I ask if your child did anything special for prep? and how far had he gotten in math? my freshman son scored 183 (reading -67, math - 51, writing skills-65) which we were happy for. He has his eye set on a high score when he takes it for real in two years and we are looking ahead for prep ideas.

He is taking algebra and geometry this year, algebra II next year (10th grade) -- will that cover everything for the PSAT?

he is a huge reader and had an extensive vocabulary -- I think that some actual practice with PSAT type tests will bring up critical reading more than anything. I am also thinking that a grammar review and some practice will help in the Writing skills. any other suggestions?

thanks!!!

Thanks for posting the link to the scores.

I think he had 76 in math, 71 in writing, 75 in reading? He has been captain of the academic superbowl math team since his freshman year and is taking AP Calculus right now. So math wasn't really a big worry. But the PSATs only go up to Geometry or Algebra 2 ( I forget) I know the SATs go into higher Algebra. So your son should be fine. I was more worried about my son's English - he is a great writer but this whole summer all he would read were "Nintendo Power's. He kept coming out to show me every obscure word any of the columnists wrote to show how that was a better way to prepare for the PSAT. But that's beside the point. He's been practicing SAT tests since elementary school on the tests in the backs of SAT prep books. He's never taken any classes or the SAT for real yet. He did take the PSAT last year - he got a 206 or 208 (I forget.)

The book he thought was most useful was called "Up Yours" or "Up Your Scores." It's written by some kids that scored perfect SAT scores and is irreverent and funny, which would explain why my ds actually read it. He actually had two copies because he lent the first one to a friend and never got it back. But he said there were several problems on the PSAT that he wouldn't have known how to do were it not for the "Up Yours" book. I'd highly recommend that book - at least it's one they'll read.

Finally got my scores in the mail today; 210 and 98th percentile. Think it will be enough to meet NC cutoff this year? If it is, when/how do I find out?

Thanks!

cuse 0507 --

congrats on the great score!! I am sure you will make the cutoff for commended, but I think you might be a little low for the semi-finalist -- NC's qualifying score was 216 in 2005 and 213 in 2004. the scores can change each year, so you won't really know for a while. I am not sure, but I think the semifinalist cutoffs are not announced until september or october of your senior year.

Thanks! I have to admit I am pretty ignorant about the whole NMSQ situation...From what I understand, semi-finalists compete to earn money while people that are commended get to report their PSAT scores to two colleges of their choice?

Anyways, I'm not too worried about it; if I get something out of it then that would be great but if not there is always the real SAT!

Thanks again!

I got a 205 (71 critical reading, 780 writing skills, 56 math), 97th percentile. I think I'm like 5 points off for commended, damnit!

I didn't study for the PSATs because I didn't think I had a chance at winning anything. But, ah well. I did pretty well for not studying, I think.

I'll just study tons for the SATs, becasue they .,. yeah,,, actually matter. :P

no, u get commended, its 202

early christmas present! I got mine today! woot.
