Hey guys,
I am a sophomore at a small town High School in Maine, and I was hoping to get some input on the discrepancies between SAT and PSAT scores that everyone has gotten. I work hard in school; currently I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA with the hardest courses available to me (excluding AP US, which would be ridiculous for me to take as a sophomore), and I have a proud history of taking home consistently high scores on tests. Just last October, however, I took the PSATs and got scores I do not consider very high; I got a 57 Critical Reading, 56 Math, and 63 Writing Skills.

So, my question is this...is it common for one's SAT scores to be much higher than the projected scores on the PSATs? How much do SAT scores really matter when applying for college? Will scores like this on the SATs kill my chances at getting into a "top-notch school"?

Anyone have any input? I’m a bit concerned about this.

Yes–if you prep. I got a 215 on my PSAT junior year and a 2350 on my SAT. Check out CC’s SAT forums.

Take the SAT this May…pay the extra to get the full score report and test booklet. Use that over the summer to work on weak areas.

Also…use your PSAT score sheet NOW to go online and go over the questions that you missed.

Many people, with practice, can improve their PSAT and SAT scores.

Also, take the ACT…some do better on that and colleges accept both.

Agree with both above posts. My SAT turned out as 2300 after a 212 PSAT and a fair amount of practice. I know others whose scores have gone down. I think it depends on how much you practice.

@mom2collegekids,

Alright, thank you so much! I will make a visit to my counselor and talk about this as well. I’ll be sure to take the SATs this May!

To everyone, thank you for your input, you’ve made me feel much better about this matter.

My PSAT was exactly the same as the SAT: 65 math, 63 CR, and 59 W; 650 Math 630 CR 590 Writing. BTW I would worry more about classes than the SAT. I got in to Ga Tech EA with these scores, which are lower than average for Tech, and My friend got a 2060 on the SAT and got deferred. My gpa was a 4.11 and his was a 3.8. So keep up the good grades and do lots of community service and that will sometimes outweigh a 190 point difference.
