This is diverting from the OP, but I would be extremely curious to know how your son Owlice will like his early college experience. If I remember corectly from other posts, he is going to Simon’s Rock?

Kelowna, yes, to Simon’s Rock. I’ll let you know how things go!

owlice…you’re right. nmsf in the fall, nmf in the spring.

congrats on the early college admit.

Our school suggested taking PSATs in 9th grade only if student had already completed geometry – they told us about 30 percent of the PSAT math is geometry. The most common math track in our school is to take geometry in 9th grade, so most of our students wait until 10th grade to take it for the first time. If your son is taking precalcus in 9th grade then I would think he would be ready for the PSATs and it would be useful to expose possible areas of weakness.

Owlice,
They changed the PSAT a bit 2 or 3 yrs ago (I’ve forgotten-- sorry) and many scores dropped, which is why the cutoffs for many states dropped that year as well. I think it incolved a change in the writing section, but apologies, I am fuzzy on this. ANyone recall??

jym626…right…probably about 3 years ago…scores dropped…and i do remember now hearing it was something about the writing.

condor, thanks for the congrats; the kid is excited about college!

I looked at what I sent NM corp, and with personal data redacted, the body of the memo I sent was:

jym, thanks for the info on the PSAT change.

thanks owlice.

Even 4-5 years ago there was change. I don’t know what this may mean but S1 missed less questions in tenth grade and his score was lower than in 9th grade and that was in the CR and W parts. Even if you haven’t taken Geometry for the 9th grade test, you can always check how you do in the rest of the math. It’s either reassurance or an early enough wake up call to try to do something about it. S2 improved quite a bit from 9th to 10th but he has his work cut out for him if he wants to come close to qualifying for NM in our state.
