PSAT Top Scorers Announced in April...

This month (April)as we all know, top scorers on the psat will have the opportunity to have NM corp. send a referral to two colleges of their choice. So, What two colleges do you guys (and gals) plan to send your NMS referral to?(post if you have a score of 200 or above).

1.Harvard
2.Yale or Johns Hopkins (not sure yet)

ps: Yeah, I know this is pointless, but I'm bored, and I haven't made thread in a while so...

is this for commended?

"PSAT Top Scorers & College Referrals?"

I've never heard of this. What exactly is this and what do you mean by being able to send NMS referral?

Thanks!

I think I'll pick two schools that are likely to give me NM aid. So... in-state publics.

Quicksandslowly...if you get the letter from National Merit, they ask that you choose 2 colleges to see your scores and be able to send you information

So let's say you barely made commended but have way better ACT scores, are you hurting yourself by sending the scores to the two colleges? S has a 201 PSAT, so it looks like he's commended--but also has a 34 ACT. He's not taking the SAT (except subject tests).

Someone can help both SoCalGal09 and my D,
My D is in the same situation. Anyone have any ideas about sending "low" commended scores? My initial feeling is that it won't hurt. As she will apply with Commended on her app and not NMF they will know anyway....so I think she is going to send...Unless someone on this forum thinks it is a bad idea. I am very proud she is commended....

Honestly, it doesn't really matter who you send it to. They'll just send you info on the school that's all.

My D is in the same situation as SoCalGal and BlueHouse - barely will get commended with 200 PSAT (took it in the middle of a migraine - OUCH), but got a great ACT. If anything, it could show colleges an improvement, an expansion of knowledge between October of junior year and whenever the ACT/SAT was taken, and/or a dedication to work on a relative weakness that the PSAT uncovered (definitely worked in my D's case).

When a notification of commendation is sent to a school, is it done with the score included, or just saying that the student is commended? In states like NY and CA the cutoff for NM consideration is usually at least 220, so if the score is not included how would the school know the difference between say a 200 and a 219 if the student is just commended?

I'm going to start a new thread with the letter question since it's slightly off topic from the original post of this tread.

haha, i remember that!
I sent mine to MIT & Johns Hopkins, two schools I didn't even apply to.

My top is UNC, I'm still deciding on my second.. CMC maybe. I lovelovelove NYC and really like Columbia but think I might rather have a more college town experience for undergrad. If I do grad I could always go to CU then. But I really don't know yet what I'll put for my second..

What did you guys get on the psat? (those who were contacted by nmc) I got 223.

When do these letters come?

What's the point of sending a referral? Does that help in the admissions process? Or is it like sending the free SAT score reports--the smaller colleges open a file for you, and it just sits in the cabinet waiting for your application?

I'm sending mine to colleges that give money for National Merit. Harvard and Yale don't care.

Huh, I didn't get this letter.. when does it come? I haven't heard anything from the Natl Merit folks since I took the PSAT, and I scored a 224.

i knew i was going to regret the ones i chose. Thus, i promised myself that i would make choices pragmatically... but lo and behold i didn't.

I ended up doing: yale + harvard
when I should have done: NYU + UMD

but i reasoned with myself: harvard+yale might send me a free application if i sent them my scores and just to get that mail is worth it -- which was dumb of me to think.

oh well

If you scored above the commended range (usually around 200 or a little higher) and you haven't received a letter, it is likely that it is at your school with either the principal or counselors. S has not received one yet either and I called NMC and they indicated that the school received the letters. It appears that some schools sent them out promptly and others have not.

i picked UNC and Vanderbilt

so the point is just to get mail, apparently?
