PSAT Writing Question

According to (no lesser of an authority than) Parkman, the most momentous event in the history of colonial North America was the expulsion of the French.

A, lesser of an authority than
B. lesser an authority such as
C. less an authority as
D. less of an authority than was
E. less an authority than

Answer: E

On this question, I narrowed it down to A and E. However, then I kind of was lost. The question sounded like it was comparing the authority of one person to another person; therefore, A looked right. Conversely, it didn't "sound" right. Could someone please tell me why you would not use "an -er verb" in this situation.

THANKS!
Robbie

I'm pretty sure lesser is never used, perhaps if you say he is the lesser of the two, but otherwise I would never use it.

Also the sentence makes no sense, unless you misplaces the parenthesis and the word "no" is supposed to be outside them.

Wow, I hope I never get a question like this. It does not make sense even with the right answer. Good grief.

Sure it does, if you have the "no" in front:

According to no less an authority than Parkman, the most momentous event in the history of colonial North America was the expulsion of the French.

Makes perfect sense. But if you take out the no then it doesn't :P

i'd go with E if i see this on the test, though i was lost earlier when u included "no" as part of the correction. besides that, this prob seems fine to me.
