Psat

Hey, im taking the PSAT next [school] year. Who has taken it? Is it hard? Will studying help?

Just out of boredom i did a practice section where like u rephrase statements...and i got 10 out of 15. im usually a very good standardized test taker but i dunno..im worried. i know for national merit it doesnt count til junior year, but still...

So any advice?

Buy the Princeton Review for PSAT preparation. I'm taking that next fall, too.

lol take the SAT before. i took the SAT in Oct, and the PSAT was a week later. i scored 70+ more.

hehe j/k. its true, but just review your algebra and brush up on grammar. that's all you need to do

Vocabulary sections were hardest for me.

critical reading is the hardest for me.

You need the PR for the PSAT.

I took the PSAT lat fall the reading and grammar stuff was easy. The math however was kind of difficult to me.

greenday are you taking it next year as a sophomore or junior. if sophomore, don't study, it doesn't matter. if junior, i still would suggest not studying either, unless you really need to guarantee getting a scholarship, which still won't necessarily happen. all in all, don't bother.

I took it this year as a junior. I got a 209. I know that isn't amazing or anything. I prepped on and off for it, cramming the last week.

I'd say to just use a good prep book like PR or Barrons and take the test. If you get a 200+ as a sophomore, you should be fine for junior year.

I know some sophs on CC get like 220+ and that's amazing, but a 200+ for soph year is very good. You're in MA, so the cutoff is like 223, I think? If you study and get a 223, then you can be relaxed about next year as a junior.
National Merit is always a good thing to have.

I got a 215 as a freshman. I take standardized tests unfairly well. My friend had a 103 in Algebra II, I had a 88 (which i pulled to a 94, he dropped to a 100.something). I beat him by like eight points on math. Go figure.

damn that crit reading
i can pull of 80/80 but then like 65-68 for crit reading
why didnt they eliminate that section and replace it with writing
arghhhhh

I pulled a 213 without really studying as a sophomore...The PSATs aren't horrendously long or difficult, but they're tricky. I got a lot of questions wrong in the math section because I didn't read the question carefully/forgot to divide by 2/etc.

What is the Hispanic National cut-off index score?

I did not prep at all sophomore (220)and junior year (213). I regret it since I found out you can get some sort of scholarship.

There's a National Hispanic Scholarship, and a National Negro Scholarship. Not joking.

Don't study for the PSAT. Waste of time.

I didn't, and I was National Merit Commended..

..then again, I don't really advocate studying for anything..

I don't think the black one is called "National Negro." Isn't it National Achievement or something like that?

Well, im pretty much the type of person that studies for most stuff, so theres no doub t im gonna study lol.

I took a few practice tests to study and get a feel for the real test. Most of the test is about reading stuff carefully and managing your time, so I would practice doing that.
