I’m an eighth grader and I took the PSATs around last year, because I took a 9th grade course. I received my score and I got a 990. Can CC members please give me any advice, recommend any websites or techniques they used? I would appreciate that.
If you want to practice for it, I’d link your CollegeBoard account to Khan Academy. They have a lot of §SAT practice options that will be adjusted to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses.
I used Khan Academy and seen general improvement. Another tip is to realize which questions you can do and which you can’t. You need blaze through the ones you can do, and debate the ones that you might have trouble with. I had more trouble with pacing myself and rushing through questions than the actual difficulty of the test itself.
@LeopardFire @surmoi I linked my Collegeboard account to Khan, is that the only type of source you used to improve on PSATS?
So far, yes. I’d use it for a few weeks and see how you do on your first practice test. If you find you aren’t improving enough, try finding other resources.
I’d say doing well in your ninth & 10th grade classes is the best path to doing well in the PSAT. It does not matter how you do at all until fall of junior year. Summer before that, study with SAT prep books.
@intparent @LeopardFire When I do take the PSATS, say the 8/9 and 10, and get my percentile, does that matter at all? I do know that there is the National Merit Scholarship for those who scored incredibly high.
I believe the only time you can get an award for the PSAT is during your junior year. I think the only point of taking the PSAT before that is to introduce yourself to the format of the test.
Junior year PSAT is the only year that counts for National Merit.
