PSU announces new scholarship funding for freshmen

UNIVERSITY PARK: Scholarship funding for Penn State freshmen on the rise | Penn State | CentreDaily.com

Well thats good news, lol

Anyone else get the scholarship?

I got the $12,000 for two years scholarship in the mail a couple days ago. I’m out of state with a 3.99 GPA/29 ACT. I think I read that their decisions are equal for in/out of state.

It’s a pretty nice offer that took me by surprise. I hear back from other colleges in January so it hasn’t impacted my decision yet.

Hm. They gave me the scholarship for 4 years, but the website said it is only for 2 years? I hope it is not a mistake.

Where did you read that decision? Also, did you apply for SHC?
I have 3.7 W GPA/2000 SAT.

I got the decision letter in the mail on Saturday. It said if I accepted my decision by May, I would receive $12,000 over two years divided evenly ($3,000/semester). I’ve taken college courses in high school so I would only need three years max to graduate anyway (a lot of my general education classes would transfer) so I didn’t care that it was only two years.

I didn’t apply for SHC; since I wouldn’t be there as long as most, I would have to take a lot of honors classes per semester, which wouldn’t be easy. Plus I didn’t feel like writing more essays!

I was getting some information from this website: [Scholarships Overview — The Office of Student Aid](http://studentaid.psu.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships)

The website I posted above doesn’t say anything about the Provost’s Award, but it gives some statistics and shows how they arrive at a decision on scholarships.

If your letter says four years, then it is probably for four years. Congratulations on getting a scholarship, by the way! :)

Well, thanks! Congratulations to you also! Graduating within 3 years will certainly save you a lot of money!

I am curious to see if there is a correlation between this scholarship and SHC acceptance.

My son received his scholarship letter today. He was accepted at Erie into thir Honor’s College and awarded a $4000/yr Provost’s Award. He’s not applying to SHC. The sholarship was definitely unexpected.

My D also received the scholarship - $12K over two years! What a nice surprise…

That’s outstanding. Congrats to you all!

Wish this had been around 3 years ago!! :(

My son got his letter yesterday - $6K year for 4 years

My son also got $24000 scholarship for 4 years. SAT I: 2190, UWGPA: 3.95

how do you know if you get a scholarship offer or not?

You’ll get a letter in the mail.

Does the letter for a scholarship come with the letter of admission?
Also, the website says that they don’t give out scholarships till March. Do you have to apply for these specifically? Are they sending out of state offers first?

Did anyone get a scholarship offer after accepting the offer of admission? DS got accepted in November, but so far has not heard about any scholarship. His stats are GPA 4.3(W), SAT 2000: 680(M), 660(CR), 660(W). ECs: swim team, 4 yr letter, captian senior year; JV tennis; NHS; Social Studies Honor Society; Spanish Honor Society; hiking club.

PSU is his no. 1 choice, but we don’t want to eliminate any chance at a scholarship. He also has been accepted at Pitt. Still waiting on UMD, UVA, VaTech, Drexel. Would accepting the offer of admission now eliminate any sholarship offers (or are his stats too low anyway)? Any advantages of accepting early? We are PA residents.

I was wondering that too. Those stats are surely high enough for some sort of scholarship, but the way I think I’m reading this is that this money is to high achieving students who PSU is trying to persuade to come here.

Not everyone is going to get one though, only 2,700 students across all campuses will get this money they’re giving out this year.

The advantage at some schools of accepting early is that you might do better in room assignment choices. Don’t know if that is the case at PSU.

Dang–where’s my DD’s - LOL! 4.0 UW GPA and 2100 SATs/31 ACT, National Merit Scholar–hope one shows up here  Going to keep my fingers crossed!!

My D was lucky to get the Provost award and her stats were not at the top range. Her CR + M were 1200, super score of 1870 and her GPA is 3.7. She got 6k over 4 years for a total of 24k. We are OOS so maybe that was a big factor and she has not committed yet to the acceptance. My understanding is only 10% of the students at UP will receive this offer- about 750 students of the 7500 incoming freshman.
