PSU BA/MD program?

is it true that Penn State Univ. is cutting its 6 year BA/MD program with Thomas Jefferson Medical College?

are you serious, please i hope you are kidding me

i've heard rumors about it because i believe the director of that program is retiring

holy moly, so does that mean no one can apply to the penn program? man, that was on the top of my list, this sucks, im gonna call them tomm just to see, hopefully they arent cutting their program

that would be a good idea (although the director of the program might be on summer break)

i know nyu had a notice all over their website when they pulled the plug on their ba/md program

hey guys can you give me some info on the PSU accelerateed med program , like the average SAT range, number of people accecpted and how the program is, also if any one got accecpted please list all your stats.....

i called psu today and they are NOT cutting the program.

wait, so is the nyu program gone for sure? since when??

The NYU program has been gone since last year

oh ok, thanks.

the only i know abt the psu program besides everything everyone else must know is that it can be extended to 7 years for those who want to have a more complete undergrad experience. so.. just to let you all know =b

yup...you can choose the 7 year option from the very beginning or you can start as a 6 year and then push it to a 7 year

the one thing you cannot do is go from a 7-yr student to a 6-yr one

the 7 year route also frees up all your summers so you can spend more time at home, with family, with friends, vacationing, working for pocket $$$, etc...

oh wow, ok. you really know you're stuff! i live in singapore so i'm not really up-to-date on all that happens with the medical schools. how do you find out the information? do you call up the universities or just do a lot of research online?

haha...i know a bit about that program because my cousin was accepted there and i drove him to penn state for the orientation

as for the other ba/md programs, the ideas you suggested were good: calling to chat with the program director, doing research online, or you can ask the school to put you in contact with current students within the program to get a student perspective

how do you ask the school to put you in contact with current students, like who do you call or email, admissions?

I would call the admissions office and ask for the director of the BA/MD program. He would probably have a list of current and past students.

anyone who has questions about the PSU ba/md program i'll be entering as a freshman this fall going the 7-year route.. i'll try my best to answer any questions you may have on here or aim

misaippa, did you get any scholarships or merit aid? How much is the overall cost including med school going to be ofr you?

Thanks

The program doesn't give any scholarship or merit aid at all. (They consider it a scholarship already as you can shave two years off your undergrad cost)

So for out of staters, the costs comes out to ~$60000 for undergrad and ~$240000 for the med school. There is a new scholarship being offered to one student per year (when you start the med school) that takes effect in med school and comes out to $20000/yr in Jefferson.

wow...that's a huge pile of dough they're making u cough up. Are most people going to the program taking out loans?

I didn't go through that program but if I had to guess, probably a lot of the students have to take out loans.

Although in general, the cost of a medical education is very expensive.

For instance, I paid a little under $160,000 for undergrad and then about a little more than $200,000 for med school. (I took a traditional route instead) So in the end, my way actually cost more!
