PSU BA/MD program?

hey sorry i dunno about the appeals stuff...
and uhh...i'm an anomaly in the program in terms of fun...so i'll let someone else answer that :-P

VietAnn...if u get called to interview i think u'll be fine...once u get to the interview...everyone is then on level ground...so bascially just shine at the interview...the structure of the interview...ull be interviewed by a med student...and then a doctor....the med student is supposed to be an easy one...but mine wasnt...so be prepared to answer tough questions...they may pose some questions that are based on morals...so there's no right or wrong answer...but whatever u say stick with it even if they try to sway u...and doctors...they can say some mean stuff...but dont let it phase u...that's what the interview is all bout...just hold ur ground be strong and confident...and ull be good...as far as fun and studying...

i personally dont think its all too bad...i have muuuuch more free time now than i did in high school...but that might just be me...the food is pretty good...weekends are fun...its a good time...wish u all the best

to adam...bout the competitiveness...gettin in is competitive...everyone in the program is really qualified...but after ur in ur like family...everyone is really cooperative...there's really no competition amongst us...we all help each other with whatever we can...i get more help from fellow progs than from TA's and professors...I thought everyone would be all uptight...but its not that way at all

by the way everyone, puch is a black man with a white heart and an indian heritage, don't be fooled..

he also enjoys head massages from the male sex, displays incest with his family, and... ok this stuff may or may not be true, so i'll stop and save puch the embarassment (he is single though ladies, but his standards are high)

other than that, Ann, I can tell you I think i had a sub par / borderline SAT score but I at least got an interview, so if you want to PM me your stats I ccan tell you based off of that, and assuming your essay is decent, if you'll at least be granted an interview, but once at the interview, i think u'll be fine as long as you be honest and show your true enthusiasm about a) the program and of course b) medicine

As for weekends, well Fall is pretty much all about FOOTBALL, and if you don't like football coming into Penn state, i guarantee you will to some degree by the end of freshmen semester.. and since our freshmen class was SOOO BLESSED to come at a year when we come out of nowhere to be #3 in the country, our freshmen semester was unique and absolutely wild every football weekend... of course there's more than just football, but most of the kids in the program have a lot of pride for PSU and enjoy every aspect of a football game... there's also GREAT concerts i think in state college, we attract some good names from a lot of different genres, yellow card, dave matthews, Kanye West were a few

studying all the time is not the norm and is certainly not necessary to maintain a 3.5.. but first fall semester CAN hit hard if you're still hung up with senioritis (i was an example, and had to study my butt off for finals, but i really didn't do anything the first two months, so even then, i shoulda been screwed, but one can bounce back) and you can fall behind in a course if you don't do so hot on the first test or two, in which case you'll be forced to study more .. but a 3.5 at penn state is very manageable with buffer science courses (easy courses to balance the hard ones), just have to schedule right

i feel food is very good, there are different commons all over the campus and each one is a little different, so tehre's variety and one can mix it up.. it may get to be somme of the same stuff after 3 months, but it's not as bad as you'd think and certainly not as bad as most schools i think

my mindset is different from the avg PSU student because i know i have to take the MCAT's sooner than a normal person, so i want to make sure i try and store some of the science stuff in long term memory.. we are accelerated, so our academic courses will be tougher than a similar freshman student

is there a certain score you must score on the MCAT to be abel to go to the jefferson medical school, or does it not matter how you do on the MCAT?

<erm ...sorry="" to="" interrupt="" people="" but="" i="" can't="" help="" it...="">

^LOLLLLLLLLL that just made my day :D :D :D

anyways... funkmasta i THINK mcat scores are said to be a "formality" at PSU.... pretty much everyone will get through to jefferson anways... but i might be confusing it with another uni...anyone wanna confirm?

yea its jefferson. Did any here back from penn state yet?

hey i dunno who's postin on here bout the mcats being a formality...cuz they aint...lots of people struggle with em...im a frosh this year in the program and im takin the mcat this summer...i know ill be studying for them...i think the program is pretty strict with the standards...although they arent extremely high...they arent very flexible...its risky to just shoot for the bar...

since puch is black and sometimes forgetful of things,

you actually need a minimum score of 27 on the MCAT to continue onto Jefferson, which is a 9 out of possible 15 points in each of the three multiple choice sections (biological science, verbal reading, physical science), and i guess they don't really care how you do o nthe writing portion (scored J-T)

It is a bit tough to study and be ready for the MCAT by the end of your first year in college, so even though a 27 is around the national average, it is still a challenge for most in the program since we've had far less time to prepare and fewer courses

thanks ippa...but u really dont have to be dissin on the entire race of people who bore this country thru some of its most critical time..

27??? I dunno how the test works but I'm gonna go ahead and make assumptions and say, that's kinda high.... anywayz, thanks for the replies.

if you google national average for mcat's, a few sites do reference that the national average on MCAT's is a 9 on each section, which is a 27..

so i'd say it's not relatively high.. also national average means in the fiftieth percentile... on a standardized test, that is not considered very high

also it's a 27 out of a possible 45 points

and i believe you get three tries at the mcat if you do indeed get below 27 the first time around... and with the mcat going electronic and being offered more than twice a year by 2007, that should bode well for future penn state pmm students

Happy New Years Everyone! And best of luck for those of you expecting interviews.

Hello everyone, new to posting, and i have a question about the location of the program. Since Penn State has so many campuses, which campus is the one that the people who are doing the BS/MD program are located? Or does it even matter? thnx

University Park.

hey everyone! Thanks for all of your nice and informative responses. The website says that as of 1/19/05 they have made a decision regarding my application. So ill be waiting anxiously in the mail for that response! fingers crossed!! I hope you guys had a great winter break. Ill definetly tell you how it goes :-)

shoot mine stays is still beinbg reviewed. does that mean i did not get an interview?

Honors College will likely notify their decisions for their first round student applications next week. I guess ba/md will notify their intervewees soon according to their website, Howver, You still have an over 50% chance to be rejected in case you get a interview.

I heard it was 50/50

I was told 100 people make it to the interviewing stage and 50 will be accepted?
