I agree with @Oneiota . There are plenty of reasons why someone would apply DUS rather than Smeal. The biggest reason being that the process to get into Smeal is the same as an undecided major as a freshman admit. Freshmen admits are really “just” pre-majors. They still have to apply at the end of sophomore year and DUS students must fulfill the same requirements and do the exact same classes. The other reason one might apply DUS is because 80% of students change their major. Thus, even if you think you want to be in Smeal, but you won’t get accepted as a Freshman admit pre major, then by all means, get in however you can and then figure out what you want to do. If that is Smeal, you are no further behind.
At some schools, when you get in as a freshmen that’s it. You don’t need to do any further requirements. PSU is not like that and their Smeal business majors are very highly competitive so there is still work to do even if you are admitted as a freshman to stay in. @ZPRMOM
I read online that engineering isn’t one of the more competitive majors at Penn St and talked to an admissions person on a visit and they said to get into engineering, they basically just make sure that you have taken all of the math’s that they want you to take in high school. Is this true? I also read that the undergraduate engineering program has a high acceptance rate, which is weird because engineering is usually tougher to get into… and since I applied bioengineering, would this hurt my chances?
Does anyone know how hard or what weight a mathematics major has? does it help that i am a girl looking to go into STEM?
Please correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure you would need to apply into Smeal at some point and need a minimum GPA. My son wants to be a business major and I don’t need him doing his general requirements because he applied dus and then 2 years later not be able to get into the business school and have to transfer. I am oos and Penn State is too expensive for us to have him go and hope for the best. This is just my opinion. This son is my 4th (and last) child going off to college and if he doesn’t get into Smeal as a freshman he won’t be going to Penn State.
DUS is easier to get admitted into, rather than smeal. So if you aren’t a sure applicant, it’s better to apply DUS
any accepted?
Yes, but so does everyone else, INCLUDING the students who started as pre-business in Smeal. I did that as a student in the College of Engineering. That’s just how PSU’s entrance to major process works.

Please understand at Smeal you need to meet a DOUBLE minimum GPA to actually be accepted into Smeal. 1. Overall cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher (3.5 or 3.7 for finance majors) by the end of the third semester in order to apply. 2. You also need to have a 3.2 or higher (3.5 or 3.7 for finance majors) in your entrance to major courses only.
Just wanted to clarify something. Does Penn state send an acceptance package and if so have any international admits received their acceptance packages??
Does anyone elses portal say that their CPR account couldn’t be found?
Yes I just emailed them about that actually, because it said to contact the admissions office for assistance… @studentny2017 maybe this means we will hear back from them soon lol
I just emailed too. Their portal has been problematic for many weeks now.
Same here, having the same problem
Now it’s under maintenance
I spoke to Admissions. Wave went out last night, and they said updates would happen through to next morning 12/21- so check back after they get the website back up and running. The website maintenance has nothing to do with the acceptances. After tomorrow AM, there will be no more updates until Jan 2nd late at night, and to check on Jan 3rd for the next wave. Hope that helps everyone. Happy Holidays to all!
@my2kidsnj did they send email out last night for the decisions in the last wave?
@mutiyo I didn’t ask that question sorry, we did not get one.
I am confused. My D applied in October and has not heard. I see folks have been admitted…not sure what it means.
