PSU Class of 2022 Decision Thread

^ Yes, but only with “pre-major” status. You then complete your Entrance to Major requirements and apply for your major later – usually during 3rd or 4th semester. There is no difference between starting in DUS and starting in Smeal, because none of those students are in their majors anyway.

(With the exception of certain special freshman-entry programs)

@Nealthakker my son applied 9/27 and still hasn’t heard anything so at this point I think its safe to assume he’ll be in the mid to late January batch.

Accepted to the pre Immunology and Infectious disease Major at University Park for fall 2018. Applied on November 1st and heard back in 13 days( just took me awhile to look up the thread haha)

Stats:
ACT: 28
GPA: 3.4UW 3.82W

This is my top choice school, very excited to have been accepted. Am looking for a roommate for anyone interested!!

@ WolfyT12 - My D says to go on FB - search Penn State Class of 2022 - there will be a link to a groupme. She’s met a few nice people on there and just met up with a possible roommate over the break

  • Good Luck AND Congtratulations!

@WolfyT12 congratulations! That major looks interesting— is it a “premed” major or will you end up with another career?

@michigander1234 , PSU has multiple degrees that can serve as premed, in addition to the actual premed major. If you look at the recommended academic plans for each major, they will share a year of biol, year of chem, organic chem, physics, year of calc, etc. (in other words…most if not all prerequisites for med school.). Other majors that may lead to med school: infectious disease and immunooogy, toxicology, vet & biomedical science, biomedical engineering, bio behavioral health, forensic science, psychology with neuroscience option, and of course all of the hard life sciences like biology, chemistry, etc. Good luck!

@jlhpsu thank you for solid advice.

I got accepted to Penn State Lehigh Valley as a premed major. My decisions letter said there were to many people in the freshman class and a lot of good candidates had to be accepted to branch schools instead of UP. If I called and asked to have my application reevaluated as undecided and for the summer program, will they reconsider? Does anyone have any tips or ideas I can use to have my application reevaluated? Penn State is my top choice, and I really wanted to go to UP.

@psuqueen2022, look for stats on freshmen profile and see how you compare. Middle 50% have a GPA between 3.55 and 3.98. If you are on the higher end of that range, ask to be re-evaluated for DUS and summer. Or just pick a similar major like biochem or biobehavioral health. You didn’t not have to major in premed to go to medical school. If you are on the low end of the GPA range, stick with a branch campus.

If you are serious about med school, you have to watch your overall GPA. iMHO, I’d opt for starting at a branch campus and switch to UP junior year. You’ll have a better chance at getting more individualized attention, which should translate into better grades and more learning.

Thanks so much for the advice! I have a 3.6, so I’m thinking because pre-med is one of the harder majors to get into it is why I was admitted to the branch school. I am not the strongest candidate for pre-med at UP. I am hoping they will re-evaluate me DUS and summer.

@psuqueen:
If you’re not among the strongest candidate at UP, you’re not premed. Premed is an intention that is realized once you are in the top 10% of students in your pre-reqs classes. If you start in the bottom 30% of students, what do you think are your odds? Therefore you have to think carefully: med school/stay at the branch campus OR another career and ask for DUS+summer session.

@psuqueen what are your stats gpa/sat ? is 3.6 weighted or un weighted?

Does UP ever ask for mid year grades?

@CLS2000 They have not in the past.

Re: 20182022 For the glory is not a scam. It means you Will recurve a scholarship if you attend the invite. If you decline the invite you will NOT still get the scholarship money. Amount unknown. It is very very prestigious

@twigmaster99 You get a scholarship for going? I didn’t know that! I hope it’s true - out of curiosity, where did you get that info?

@twigmaster99 For the Glory invite means you are getting a scholarship? Seems unlikely since space is limited to first come/first serve.

Applied 11/8 still haven’t heard back, getting nervous…

GPA: 3.7W
SAT: 1320
Full IB Diploma
OOS (California)
Major: Biology

It’s early for Penn State. Don’t worry yet:) My D applied to nursing in early Oct with no word back yet. We’ve been told the majority find out mid to late Jan.
GPA 3.92W
ACT 28
OOS (Ma.)
Major: Nursing
NHS, tons of EC including camp counselor,2 varsity sports

This is what it said under my admission decision:

“Thank you for applying to Penn State. We have carefully evaluated your academic credentials, and although we cannot offer you admission to the College of Health and Human Development with the intended major of Kinesiology at Penn State University Park, or University Park, there are other educational opportunities that await you at Penn State.”

Then they asked me to contact admission office.

I told them In the past that I only wanted to start and UP.

Can someone help me out and tell me what this means? Thank you
