@UPclass2022 Did you just request a new major or did you actually file an appeal due to extenuating circumstances? Very different things…
@jlhpsu I appealed with extenuating circumstances as my main reason but added on the change of major to increase my chances of the appeal being accepted
Hi! I just created an account because I wanted to learn more about PSU and Smeal. I have a few questions about Smeal and hopefully someone here can help provide some answers!
I know that before I can officially declare my major in sophomore year, I need to maintain a 3.2 GPA and at least Cs in all of my classes. Is it very difficult? What happens if I don’t meet these requirements? Do I need to start all over and select a new major? I also received an invite to apply for the Sapphire program, if I were to be accepted, would my chances of reaching a 3.2 be higher? Thanks in advance!

Sapphire program helps you find other business students and it’s like an honors program reserved to business pre admits. I think they have a dedicated LLC.
You will need to get at least a B (+/-) in every ‘entrance to major’ class and it’s not easy. Check the credit policy to see whether you would get some weedout classes waived through AP credit.
Remember that a marketing major needs excellence in statistics (or date analysis or data science) so make sure to look at the possibilities for taking a few classes in this/these fields.
Does everyone that gets accepted into Smeal get invited to the Sapphire program?
So I had appealed and sent my letter. My “mypennstae” account had changed back to the univeristy park picture of old main from the altoona one and I was just wondering how long do you think it will take for them to give me a decision and does admissions see my appeal letter when they go back and pick out my application after putting it back into the UP summer pile?
@Jhp1599 I don’t know if anyone really knows how they do it. Based on what I’ve read, it seems like you’ve gone bak into the ‘regular’ pile - which actually be more competitive than the “before 11/30” pile. However, there are people who have heard in as few as two weeks with an appeal, major chance, etc.
Regardless, based on your stats, I wouldn’t have high expectations. I think Altoona is a great option for you - demonstrate that you can be successful and then spend your last two years at UP. With your GPA (2/3 of the decision), it is just too low - even with summer - than the rest of your peers.
Maybe your extenuating circumstances will be enough to mitigate that low GPA, we don’t know all the facts. I know this isn’t the answer you are looking for, but it is probably the realistic answer.
good luck.
@jhs126 Congrats on your acceptance! I am sorry that I am actually not able to answer your question, but I do have several questions to ask you. I noticed that you attend a public school in PA, and your race is Chinese. I am in the same situation. I want to ask did you apply as an international student? When did you apply and when did you hear back? I applied to UP Nursing around Oct 30th, and mine is still “under review”. Thanks!
@stressedout1018 according to the admission people, and the website if you applied after the 11/30 deadline, but before the 12/31 deadline they will release admission status no later than 02/28 (the end of this month). My son thought he had gotten everything in before the 11/30 deadline, but unfortunately, his transcript was delayed by several weeks. Which put him in the December regular decision category. I believe anything after December, for most schools tend to come out in April before May.
Hope this helps! Good luck
@caflis43 - yes, everyone has a chance to apply
@MYOS1634 Thank you so much for the advice!
@axwclassof2022 Hi and thank you! Actually, I did not apply as international. I moved to the US when I was 5 and have been using a green card all these years so I said Permanent Resident. I applied October 21st and didn’t hear back until January 27th. Hmm from what I have heard, as long as you applied before the November 30th deadline you should receive a response by the end of this month! Hope you get in! Soon!! Good luck
@jhs126 Thank you!!!
Has anyone tried to login to my PSU today. The site seems to be down.
Does anyone know how to appeal an admissions decision?
@kme57310 You were accepted already correct? So what are you attempting to appeal?
@aabsku Hi! Did you receive a decision? Also, has any other international applicant that has applied for engineering received a decision?
I’m asking for a friend who was wondering @jlhpsu
I applied for cs at Penn State UP. I have a score of 1400 and good marks in school as well. My essays and LORs are strong too.
But I was given 2+2 option. Can anyone tell me the reason?
^ what’s your GPA? Are you an international applicant?
