Hey guys...I've lived in State College my whole life and am now a freshman in the Schreyer Honors College....so if you have any questions, feel free to ask! I've been poking around this board and figured I'd post just in case anyone needed some help! I'm not saying I'll actually be of any help....but I can try! =)

How nice of you! Are you living on campus or at home? If it is true that Schreyer no longer looks at test scores, what are they looking for? What do you think it was that got you in there?

I am living on campus in Simmons Hall which is one of two honors dorms. It's not actually all honors, however...both honors dorms are about 60% honors, 40% non-honors. It's really nice and has the perfect location on campus. It's right next to the downtown area and also right next to the main drag of class buildings.

As for tests scores, I don't think that they are completely disregarded, but I don't think that they carry nearly as much weight as the rest of the application process. I got a 1330 on my SATs, which is good, but not phenomenal...and I still got in! I think that my GPA (4.67 weighted) and the rest of my stats were much more important to the admissions people. I also think that the essays are a HUGE factor. I spent the majority of my time writing my essays and I know that they put a lot of time in coming up with essay questions that will give them a good sense of who a student really is and what he/she wants to accomplish in life. I think that my essays were definitely one of the main reasons I got in. I know many people from my high school who applied that were uber book smart and did better than me on the SATs, but didn't get in. Extra-curriculars and leadership positions are also a good thing to have when applying. I played 4 years of basketball and did various other things. I think they're looking to find students who are looking to get involved, but still take their studies very seriously.

So far I am completely loving the Schreyer experience...definitely would recommend at least applying! I know the essay questions this year are toughies, but I really learned a lot about myself when writing mine and I ended up proud and satisfied.

is schreyer more work than you expected it to be?

So far, no. I have to take 9 honors credits this year (basically 3 honors courses) and I am taking two right now, and have one scheduled for the spring.<--Side note: I scheduled for spring semester on Sept. 19th...and the rest of the Univ. has yet to....one of Schreyer's many perks.-->

As I said, I currently am in two honors courses: English 30 (required for all honors freshmen) and an honors seminar in political science on the 2008 election. I am taking 15 credits total right now (5 classes) and it is not nearly as bad as I thought. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of work and the readings are extensive, but I was expecting to be bombarded and inferior...and I'm not. My hardest class is actual a General Education class in the natural sciences (I'm not a science person!) and it is not an honors course.

Honors classes aren't necessarily more work, they are just smaller classes (which is very nice...usual 20 people max) and they also are a little more in depth than regular classes.

bump..............
