psu graduate

if i were to graduate from the psu/ jefferson med 6 year program and get my md at the age of 24, i know i would have to do residency and such but around what age would i be able to truly start practicing medicine?? about 30?
how long is the residency and whats after it? thanks much

Depends on which field you pursue.. if want to be a surgeon you'll in for the long haul. If you just want to be a pediatrican, you can probably start practicing by the time you're 28. Residencies are usually 4-6 years and can be followed by a fellowship in a subspecialty. Ex. residency in psychiatry followed by fellowship in child psychiatry.
