Instate tuition for PSU
Nicer weather in Florida
Harder to get in for Florida
Better programs/ranks for PSU
Which would you pick? & why?

What’s the difference in cost between the two and, more importantly, HOW ARE YOU PAYING FOR IT?

@LucieTheLakie both my parents and I are paying, they would rather me stay instate but they don’t want me to have any regrets.

That wasn’t the question UnsureGirl2014 - in other terms:
how much does each cost, before any loans and after any scholarship/grant? How much can your family afford to pay out of pocket? How do you plan to contribute (summer earnings, part time job, work study, federal loans…?)
It’s actually harder to get into Penn State than into UF, actually. But no one can deny that the Florida weather is better.
You speak about “better programs”: what would these be?
Did you get into Honors College at either?

OOS UF tuition ($28.4K) vs. In-state PSU ($16.4); That’s about $12K a year in additional cost.

In general, since both schools are peers, the best option is staying in-state. However, if you can get better Merit/FA at Florida, then it may make sense from a finacial view.

I can think of only a few programs that one school has that’s signficantly better (or not offered) than the other. Have you picked a major, yet?

@Gator88NE I’m planning on majoring in business (not sure what type yet) and minoring in Spanish

@MYOS1634 the price difference will be about 12 thousand dollars per year difference. But 12x4… Is that really worth the benefit of the nice weather is what I’m trying to figure out. And UF’s acceptance rate and stats are higher, plus for an out of state student. And I’m interested in business and PSU has a pretty well ranked business school. So any thoughts?

@UnsureGirl2014

The weather’s a plus, but you need to find additional reasons to make it worth an additional $50K to choose UF.

UF’s school of business is also fairly well ranked, as compared to PSU. I would recommend a visit to UF, but that is something of a road trip (if you went today you could compare UF’s 75 degree and sunny weather to PSU’s 40 and Icy rain weather…lol).

For example, another factor you should consider is your plans after graduation. If you plan on working in the NE, then PSU may be a better choice, since it has a stronger connection to that part of the country; while UF would be a better choice if you planned on staying in the Southeast.

I see you’re thinking of minoring in Spanish. UF has close ties to Central and South America. Check out the Study Abroad Services:

UF’s connection to this part of the world goes behind it’s study abroad programs.

Good Luck!

Do your parents have the extra $12,000? What are they saying?
(It’s ABSOLUTELY NOT worth it if you/they took out loans).
If it’s within their budget “out of pocket”, without loans, won’t stretch the family budget, and they’re willing to pay for it, then there’s no reason why you should attend PSU. However I caution you against thinking UF is “better” than PSU. As Gator said, there are only a few specific programs in which one is better than the other for undergrad (also, the Florida GPA is weighted out of 5.0 so you may be comparing apples and oranges.)
Be aware that admission to the business schools is competitive, so at both schools you’ll need to maintain a high freshman GPA (3.2 minimum but 3.3 is recommended. Remember that it’s harder to get high grades in college than in high school.)
