PSU Trustees Thinking About Private Route

Well, somebody important finally said it out loud.

Penn State open to going private - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Cornell was a private university that then had some programs/colleges of public interest subsidized by the state of NY. This Penn State discussion would be a reverse, in which a public university might privatize parts of itself. I’m guessing they would privatize the parts with the highest demand - business, engineering, etc.

Right now, this is a subset of the Trustees talking about it.

If the State doesn’t slash Penn State’s budget, then this discussion goes away. If the State does slash Penn State’s budget, then in-state tuition will go up at a much faster rate than out of state tuition. Remember - that is the main use of the state money - to provide a tuition discount for in-state students.

There will be an even bigger economic incentive for Penn State to increase the percentage of out of state students at State College, which is already 1/3 of students.

I actually just heard from my financial adviser at the school im going to [I’m transferring to UP from another university, and this adviser is a PSU alum with multiple acquaintances/connects working at PSU] that they’re considering it. Now, I don’t know how much he knows or if he just heard of it like everyone else, but it’s worth taking very seriously [the idea that they could become private in the next couple years].
