Decently surprised that I only got summer! It’s very frustrating to say the least, but at least I got accepted in some way! GPA is SOOOO NOT 2/3 of the decision, and my school counts 95> an A, with A- starting at 92. Penn State used to be my number one, however, I’m not totally sure I’m prepared to spend the majority of my summer in school! Maybe I’ll ask to be reconsidered for DUS Fall?
Wow I’m surprised I got in, I probably have the lowest stats in this thread
Accepted: Petroleum Engineering (The College of Earth & Mineral Sciences), University Park
SAT: 1870/2400 (630 reading, 550 math, 690 writing)
SAT IIs: N/A
GPA: 3.45…weighted. My school doesn’t tell us our unweighted. Probably terrible.
Rank: Top 10% (not the smartest school haha)
Essays: copy and pasted another essay from another college. I thought it was great
Teacher Recs: N/A
Counselor Rec: N/A
Hook (if any): my resume was nice. I’ve been personally interviewed by the washington post, have over 25 awards in various state competitions, worked at a newspaper for a bit, and made one extracurricular club on my own. but that was the only EC I was in.
State or Country: Maryland
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Black

There are several of us @scohen99! And remember, those of us on CC are only a fraction of the total applicants. So if you extrapolate the dozen or so still waiting here, that means there are plenty still waiting. Not sure we can do anything about it at this point!
Well, sad to report my son was rejected tonight from Smeal. Very frustrating that we waited so long and had our hopes up. Just goes to show that you never know. He is well above the bubble for Penn, but apparently Smeals standards are significantly higher. Good luck to all of those that are continuing to wait it out…
When I called this morning they said they will be making decisions up to notifying on the 31st. So there must be many others left without a decision. She also verified that “lateness” had nothing to do with acceptances or denials.
I know for many of us, even though there is hope for the first choice…at this point we just need to have an answer. The wait has been rough…but within a week, we all have answers…answers that I hope we want!
@snoogleki I’ll be brutally honest with you. I’m a current student at PSU UP right now and I applied pretty late. I applied right before the deadline and I still barely got in. I’m sorry but you vould be Harvard material and still get rejected from UP after the priority deadline. The school’s standards have gone up and in addition, your stats are almost below average for CoE here. Still, I wish you the best of luck!
Supposedly status change to “coming days” may go out but they told another poster that no final decisions over the weekend. But, honestly, nothing has been consistent with their answers.
what they said yesterday was that if they made a decision yesterday, then you would get the coming days status today and then your decision next week. But i think if you already have your coming days status, they could update to the decision over the weekend. I’ve heard of others getting their decisions on the weekend who got coming days on a friday.
But @Leyland is right…there is little in the process that seems to follow set hard and fast rules.
@defndr11 penn state has a work study program for students, I’m not sure how it works in the summer, but when I went up on a tour last summer there were students working in the dining halls
@defndr11 Perhaps she can get a job in State College? There are plenty of places looking for people in the summer because their student employees have gone home for the summer. Additionally, here is what they posted yesterday in a FAQ article about summer admission.
"I applied for fall at University Park, but I was offered admission for summer – what does this mean?
Penn State does not automatically review all applications for summer admission. When completing the online application, you can indicate if you would like to be reviewed for the summer session, in the event we are unable to offer you admission for the fall semester. If you indicate your interest in summer, we will address that, if necessary, during the review process.
So, if you apply for fall at University Park, we review your application for the fall semester first. If we are unable to offer admission for the fall, we then review the application for summer, which is slightly less competitive than the fall semester and gives students another chance to start at the University Park campus.
If you are accepted for summer, it is mandatory that you come to the University Park campus and take classes during summer session. You live on campus for the six-week semester and take two actual Penn State courses – they are not orientation courses or nonessential courses, but rather courses for your general education requirements or your intended degree. You then have a two-week break, after which you return to University Park and jump right into the fall semester (with 6-7 credits and a great familiarity with campus already!). Students starting in the summer may wish to consider taking part in LEAP, a summer experience specifically designed for new first-year students."
I understand how the summer option can be costly. It’s about $691/credit instate and double that for oos, plus R&B. I can see it running close to $10k for oos. But, if it means you might be able to save in your jr or sr year, then it’s worth it, since tuition is certain to rise every year. I do NOT understand, however, why people consider the summer option a deny? To me, it’s an acceptance to UP, and you get a jump-start. Am I missing something? Is it a weed-out sessions whereby if you don’t get a certain mark in your two classes, you are thrown out?
