PSU (University Park) or Drexel or Purdue for Pre-med

I’m an international student from India. I’ve accepted to Purdue. I’m still waiting for decisions from PennState and Drexel.

As an international, it’s pointless for you to be premed since you won’t be allowed into med school.

What exact majors have you applied for at each and will you get AP credit for anything?

What’s the net cost at each?
(tuition fees room board) - (grants scholarships)

Purdue has extreme weeding in some first year classes. Well reknown for engineering.
Drexel is very expensive for what it offers.
Penn State has a great alumni network but is very expensive. It’s also bad news you’ve not been admitted yet, it probably indicates you’ll have to start at a branch campus.

Thanks, for your reply.

I don’t have any problems financially. I applied for Biology major in PennState and Drexel and Pre-med major in Purdue.

Is it possible for you to pm me? I have many doubts since I’m not that much familiar with US college system. I’m comitted to study in the US since I want to do many pieces of research and acquire practical knowledge which is not possible in my country (India).

What exactly do you mean by “you won’t be allowed into med school”? I know the chances of me getting into US Medical schools are very slim, but I want to try. I also have a conditional offer from UCL, but it’s for B.Sc in Biomedical Sciences. I’m feeling hopeless.

^I’m guessing that’s what MYOS meant - it’s very, very challenging for international students to get admitted to U.S. medical schools. And unless you are very wealthy, it’s also difficult to pay - there are virtually no scholarships for international medical students, and they don’t have access to federal loans that U.S. students do.

In fact, Yale has this warning on their undergraduate admissions website:

Last year, only 112 students out of 21,030 matriculants to medical colleges had their legal permanent residence outside the U.S. That’s 0.5%. Ratios have been about the same going back the 10 years AAMC has data.

Nevertheless, the way that med school admissions work in the U.S. is that your undergrad college doesn’t matter that much, as long as it’s a good school. Drexel, Penn State and Purdue are all great options to be pre-med and potentially try for med school in the U.S., at least from a U.S. student’s perspective. (I have no idea whether going to a more prestigious school helps with international medical admissions, but if that’s the case, I’d say Penn State and Purdue have the edge on Drexel).

@juillet Thank you for your reply. I guess I’ll wait for the decision from Penn State before deciding.
