My son got his financial aid notification from PSU. Sadly it contained no mention of scholarships so this school is likely out for us. He was accepted into Binghamton, Delaware and UMD - College Park all with Honors and $$ so we kind of expected something from PSU as well.

Is there anyone out there who would stilll recommend PSU without Honors or $$ (total 30K/year) over UMD College Park with Honors and an 8K scholarship (total ~23K/year)?

I dont really consider Delaware to be equal to these two for Computer Engineering but does anyone else beg to differ? Delaware with Honors & 8K scholarship is an absolute bargain at ~17K/year. S is interested in traveling so he could do their Travel Abroad program every Winter semester with the extra $$ he would be saving by going here.

PSU doesn't give a lot of scholarships initially, but i remember one of the people i talked to from there said that there are opportunities for scholarships as you get settled into a major and that there are lots of scholarships for specific majors. That might be something you should ask about/look into if you really like PSU.

sister had same situation, bing, marly, or Dela, chose psu without $ and honors, VERY happy. She visisted friends at UMD and hated it, coompared to psu. HOpe this helps

Yep.... I got my "package" which consists of a $2650 STAFFORD LOAN. and that's it. WONDERFUL ... they're really not giving me too much incentive to go there, but unfortunately my top 2 (NYU, Northwestern) cost over 40k a year

the same happened to me. my mom called and asked what the deal was. we felt embaressed when the woman said, "well do you make under $40,000 a year? you see, we try to save our scholarships for those inpoverished."

psu is out for me. umd + instate + $5,000 and any need-based aid i'll get today (the email comes in a few hours) could make it down to $10,000.

and umd is not in the ghetto. i live twenty minutes away from it. sure, some areas aren't fantastic, but it's a very nice campus that is near a whole lot. washington, d.c. and montgomery county is right there....montgomery county being one of the richest counties in the country

when u say "the emial comes in a few hours", how do you know that? im anxiously waiting for that email to, heard rumors about it coming today...

i just really don't understand how i could get $30,000/yr from Carleton College, and $00000 from Penn State? I don't know...I was actually considering going to Penn State over some really good schools (Northwestern, CMC, Carleton, W&L) but now its definitely out...goodbye blue and white :(

The academics at UMD are much better....but I would have to say the social life at PSU is better....I was accepted to both for Engineering (Maryland native). I would probably choose UMD over PSU.
