Hi, I'm going into my sophomore year now at SUNY Purchase.

Right now I'm looking at a double major in Journalism and Cinema Studies, and my desire is to go into the Television industry. Along with this, I have room for one minor (I looked at the option of doing both, but really I think it will just be stressful in the long run, given my situation). I'm deciding between a minor in either Psychology or Economics (I already have one class in each covered, so grad time is not an issue- we're looking at 4 years).
I feel like the Psych study will give me some great general know-how on dealing with people and understanding behavior (the field itself fascinates me). On the other hand, studying Econ may give me a tactical edge with some knowledge that could open a potential door for some things on a business/marketing/financial aspect, which I'm none too shy about.
Any advice/alternatives would be greatly appreciated; thank you guys for listening.

*Important note- I have considered the full cost in terms of time spent studying with 20+ credit semesters, and will fully accept that responsibility and I know I'll still have time for a social life and one or two extracurriculars that I enjoy, so do not worry about that.

You need to ask yourself which would help you moral with your major, and with your future career and pursue that one. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help

^ Yes, which minor is more morally acceptable? :p

In all seriousness though, I would recommend choosing the minor that you are more personally interested in, which seems to be psychology. Not only would that reduce the chances of you doing poorly in those courses - and hence reducing the chances of your minor being a weight on your overall GPA - but, as you mentioned, you might be able to pick up some things that will be applicable in the future. Taking an economics course is not the same thing as taking a management/business course, and I’m sceptical as to how many marketing doors you’ll be able to open with it (and to be honest, marketing has more to do with psychology!) If you have the time for it, you could try taking an intro Micro course to try your hand, if you’re not convinced.

A minor in Econ isn’t enough. That stuff just covers things like Keynesian Economics, Law of Supply and demand, a minute amount of policy. All the good stuff is at the upper level, and the electives that you’re allowed to take at the higher division level, like corporate finance and investments

Thanks for the responses! I feel like I’m just going to pursue coursework in both subjects beside my majors’ classes so that I can pick the one I get the most fulfillment out of when the friction starts building around junior year or so. I may post again about the majors sometime soon, since that’s another whole pandora’s box of questions itself; nevertheless, thanks for the advice! It’s given me more to think about.
