Has anyone here taken it that can give me some insight as to what to expect?

Oh, and can I be a research assistant in the Fall if I choose to take psych 101 in the spring?

You can start being a research assistant at any point you feel you’re interested in research. (I began in the second semester of freshman year, had definitely not taken psych 101!) But if you want to write an honors thesis, you can wait till you take this course before writing it.

Psych 101 is not as difficult as some psych students make it out to be… I’m not sure if this is because I’ve been exposed to much more difficult classes (i.e. premed classes) so it doesn’t feel too harsh. In general, if you keep up with the reading, practice problems on your own, and ask questions when they come up - you’ll be ok. Just try not to fall too far behind. And don’t be scared of the math, it’s more about the concepts and understanding (the math part is easy).

I’m not sure what you’re saying here. I’m planning on taking the Honors thesis over 2 semesters, are you suggesting that I take Psych101 before I start on the thesis?

I think technically, psych advisers say to take psych 101 before starting your honors thesis. But actually, you can take it concurrently during your first semester of the thesis - and it should be fine. It’s just that during your second semester when you’re actually doing most of the writing - you’ll need that stats background to be able to analyze/interpret/ and discuss your data.
