I'm warming up to the idea of Psychiatry.

But I applied with Pre-Psychology as my major.

I heard the path to Psychiatry is through Pre-Med. Does this mean I have to change my major? Is Pre-Psychology set in stone now?

…what?

you can specialize in psychology as your medical residency, once you go through medical school and ERAS. you can do psychobiology to fulfill your pre-med requirements.

wow, are you jumping the gun! First, you get a college degree. Then you get into med school. Then you get into a residency program in Psychiatry. Which is about 9 years from now. In other words, your undergrad major has about 0% relevance…

Seriously? I thought undergrad would have some effect on what I would like to do in the future.

This leads me to my second question. I’m deciding between UC Berkeley and UCLA. Will it not matter to me which campus I attend if I’m applying to a med school program in the future?

Medical schools don’t care about what major you choose, as long as you completed your required classes (1 year of physics, chem, bio, calc). They don’t care about which campus you go to for undergrad. As long as you have a high GPA and high MCAT score, you’ve cleared those major hurdles. The rest is what you do on each campus - extracurriculars, research, clinical shadowing, etc.

Read up on some medical schools’ admission requirements to get a better idea of what they expect.

I heard med schools like diversity in their students so majoring in something other than bio/biochem will be a plus!

^To a point. You still have to fulfill your pre-medical requirements and show proficiency in them. Your non-science major can be a good talking point given that you’ve done well.

If you don’t want to take pre-med, go to UK, Aus, or HK.
