How strong is the psychology department at Berkeley?
Also, how hard is it to get into? I hear it's an impacted major.

Hey, I’m declaring Psych this semester (I’m going to be a junior) and I have some words of wisdom for you.

Psych at Berkeley really is wonderful and I’m not just sayiing that b/c I’m majoring in it. It’s impacted for a reason and all the upper division classes are highly impacted and sought after. On top of that, Berkeley’s Psych Grad program is the best in the nation and the GSI’s (graduate student instructors to T.A’s) are smart and make taking psych classes a fun experience.

It is not that difficult to get into Psych. It is an impacted major but if you can get at least a 3.2 GPA in the seven lower division requirements (before you reach 80 units) you’re guaranteed a spot. the only difficult part is taking all those lower division classes as they span from biology to social sciences. Hope this helps.

PS
Take Psych 1 asap as it will give you a better clue as to what Psych at Cal is all about

I’m actually a high school senior interested in Berkeley because of the Psychology program. And I have looked at the department website, and it would seem that I would be able to bypass Psych 1 because I got a 5 on the AP Psych test.

I really appreciate your advice. It’s helped me to decide to apply to Berkeley after all. Now all I have to do is get in! Thank you. :)

Taking Psych 1 anyways may not be a bad idea…Gives you a good overview of the major.
