Can someone describe the psych major experience. what are the teachers like, are the classes hard or easy? Can you do well if you study hard, or are the teachers unfair?
ALSO
What are the co ops like and how much do they pay? Thank you!!

If no one wants to answer that, can someone tell me how easy/hard it is to get into the psych major. please dont tell me that all majors are equally as difficult to get into, as i know that engineering is harder to get into than education.

My daughter is a Psych major in her third year. She has been very impressed with the program and her professors. She is currently on coop at a major Boston Hospital doing research and is also doing a directed study with one of her profs. She will get a stipend for her coop…it is pretty well known that psych majors will not make as much money as engineering or business majors. However, she loves her field of study and plans to go to graduate school…research experience is essential if you plan on pursuing graduate work.

I took a handful of psych classes and they were all very manageable and generally well taught. As for co-ops, my psych friends worked in a variety of types of fields. Some stayed in NU psych labs, some did psych/neuro research at nearby hospitals (Brigham & Women’s, MGH, etc), some worked in autism research or autism behavioral therapy. You can probably tailor it toward whatever interest you have.

My only advice is that being a major without a clear path after graduation, know what you want that psych degree for (a major reason co-op is so awesome: it can show you your options), and work to gain experience in that area.

thank you both! as for the major, is it one of the easier or harder ones to get into, or is it about average. (i am trying to get in with a 2000 sat and a 3.9 gpa out of 4.0)

and i also really want/ need merit money
(i wont be able to go otherwise)

NEU is quite generous with scholarships but don’t expect anything over 25k.

My daughter who is a senior tells me that most of the students are far more competitive there now than they were when she came in in 2008. I know the business and engineering students generally make more money in co-ops than some of the other majors. My daughter is a health science major and she has had two co-ops , both paying around $500 for a 40 hour week…the last one ended in July 2012 , but she still works there when they need her because she was good at it and more reliable than some of the others who were on her team.
Co -ops are a great way to open doors for employment , even now in bad economy
