Psychology Major Troubles...Help!?

So, I wanna start off this post by saying I was never really into school growing up. From elementary to middle and high school, none of the subjects I was required to take classes in interested me, and I never found myself excited to go to school besides seeing friend. This is where my problem begins. I am now a second semester freshman in college and I have no idea what I want my major to be. Up until this semester, I can’t think of a single class that really intrigued and excited me. I am now taking an Intro to Psychology course and I love it. I am excited to go to this class every week and the content is so interesting to me. That leads me to thinking maybe I should major in psychology. Now after doing lots of research, I am finding many negative things about getting a psychology degree. From “it’s only a major for people who want an easy course load” to “you’ll never get a real well paying job with that major.”

Now I’m torn about what I should do. I have been thinking a lot about possibly doing a double major with psychology that may be more beneficial for me in the long run. I should probably mention that mathematics is definitely not an option for the second major. Advanced math of any sort is not my strong suit and I’d be better off not having a second major if mathematics was my only option. I’m not really sure where to go from here and some advice would be great!

Ugh, one of my least favorite things is disparaging remarks about social science majors, particularly psychology. I was a psychology major in undergrad, OP. I got a PhD in it and am currently a postdoc.

Your major does not determine your career - your preparation and your job choices do. You can major in psychology and go into anything - there are psychology majors in marketing, in consulting, in management, in human resources, in social work, in tech, in communications…in everything. You don’t have to double-major if you don’t want to, although it would be beneficial (however, the majors I think are most beneficial are math-heavy - computer science and math, lol).

If you like psychology, go ahead and major in it. Also make sure that you do internships in college and learn some skills that are useful (statistical analysis, app development, a programming language, writing…something). Armed with internship experience and useful skills you can launch an interesting career with a middle-class lifestyle with a psychology major.

What career options would a double major in psychology and computer science entail? That is the only STEM type major that would actually interest me.
