Psychology Majors

Could anyone who is either a first year (like me!) or current Psych. (BA) or Psych. (BS) major describe what their first semester schedule looked like? Which courses would you recommend taking, who are the best professors.. etc? Thanks in advance (:

wooooo psych bs!

Me too! Do you have your schedule all set?

Yeah, just got back from orientation a couple of days ago…

Principles of Chem I: CH301 MWF 2-3 (Mccord)

Intro to Psych: PSY301 MWF 11-12 (Salinas)

Cell/Molecular Bio Lab: BIO 205L M 8-9/T 9-1 (Allen)

Microeconomics: ECO304K MWF 12-1 (Hickenbottom)

Moderninty of (forgot name): UGS303 MW 1-2/F 3-4 (Richmond-Garza)

You?

I’m going to orientation in a week… so I don’t know yet…did you take AP Psychology?

no i didnt :/

I’m a 2nd-year Psychology B.S./Pre-med major, and my first semester I took:

BIO 311C (Intro to Biology I)
CH 301 (Principles of Chemistry I)
PSY 304 (Child Psychology)
CC 306M (Into to Medical Terms)

If you’re going to be doing a B.S., it’s typical to take BIO 311C and CH 301 your first semester in college. Then your second semester, you go on to take BIO 311D and CH 302. Most freshmen in Liberal Arts are required to take a UGS course as well. If you took AP Psychology in high school and got credit like I did, you can go ahead and register for another lower-division Psychology class besides PSY 301 which is Intro to Psychology and is the course that most freshmen psychology students enroll in because they didn’t get AP credit and need the PSY 301 credit to go on to take other psychology classes at UT and fulfill their major.

If you didn’t take AP credit and are a Psychology B.S. major, I recommend you take:
BIO 311C
CH 301
PSY 301- Intro to Psychology
a UGS course
and another credit to fulfill your Fine Arts/electives (like TD 301)

I took 12 hours my first semester so I could adjust easily to my first semester at UT, and it was the right amount for me, even though if you are a B.S., I would probably recommend you take 15 hours, because it wasn’t really THAT bad to handle and you have SO many pre-med/science requirements you have to fulfill in the next semesters and years at UT that you want to use as much space as you can your freshman year to get all the little things out of the way.

Good luck to you all!

Orientation is SO confusing and so crazy especially with registration, so let me know if you need any help or have any other questions! Hook 'em!

@texas2013 Wow thanks so much, that was extremely helpful!! would you recommend taking credit from AP Psychology?

Take credit from AP Psych if you took the AP test. Trust mee, it’ll just make your life so much easier!

Robyroby- yes, definitely claim credit if you scored high enough on the AP Psychology test. It’s a waste to take PSY 301 again. However, if you got AP credit for CH 301 or BIO 311C, I would recommend taking those classes again at UT, because if you apply to graduate school (like medical, dental, etc.) they like to see that you ahve taken these at UT instead of claiming AP credit or taking it at a community college. Good luck!

thanks!! @soniya and @texas2013 :D

I’m taking General Chem I and II over the summer at a cc right now. My advice to you if you need to take one of the important classes for graduate school is that be sure you take a higher level class at a university. For instance, I’ll be taking OChem and Biochem at UT so I was told that’s fine.
