I'm starting my college apps and finding that most of the essays require me to write about why I chose the major I did. I really don't want to go in as Undecided so I want to pick a major to write about. I plan to be a pediatric occupational therapist and I wanted to major in something related to that. After narrowing it down, I've been stuck between psychology and child development for months now. I need to decided, but I just can't. I feel good about both of them. I need help!

Could you just pick one temporarily and write about why you are interested in it (but not necessarily interested in it above all other majors)? And then you can find a way to double major or minor in the other subject. In fact, maybe you could even pick one as your “primary” and spend your essay discussing both majors.

@OnMyWay2013 I don’t want to double major because I’m also doing a pre-professional program and it would just be too much work
Picking one temporarily might be how it ends up if I switch from one to the other later, but I don’t know which one to go in as.

Hmm… Is there any overlap? For example, you might get to take some Child Development classes for the Psych major, or the other way around? Or even if there is no overlap, would majoring in either give you space to take electives in the other area?

If no to that too, ultimately, it might come down to counting the number of courses that would interest you for both majors (I feel like Psych major = A lot of Psych courses, whereas CD major = A little Psych, Some CD, Some Sociology, Anthropology, etc.). But for the purposes of choosing right now, which major would help you write a better essay? That might mean, which major supports your current interests and career goals more?
