psychology or sociology chance....

i am deciding either psychology or sociology as my major...
Maybe both... but how competitive I am if I am done w/ all my pre-req and IGETC. around 3.7ish GPA. (For Cal/UCLA)
Also, hard to decide a major... help please....

i too am in a similar situation. I am deciding which major to apply for, either poli sci or econ, which are both impacted. I do want to double major or at least minor in one. I will have prereqs done for both this fall. I know that if i'm not admitted into the econ department at ucla as a transfer, i won't be allowed in.. so should i apply as an econ major? Isn't one of the benefits of ucla's tap (which i will have done) consideration for a second major in the case that i'm rejected to the primary one? any advice please

keep in mind, you're not admitted by major so just choose the major for which you'll write a better, more relevant essay or for whichever you have a higher GPA.

and inch, if i were you, i'd apply under econ

What do you mean you're not admitted by major?

At Berkeley you are admitted by department under which your major falls. At UCLA you are still admitted by major.

^ yup, i was talking about berkeley.

Hey torrance!

at berkeley, even if u apply by college, you are still under the major for which u applied UNLESS u completed all of the requirements already; then once u get there, u can switch immediately before school starts, during orientation, or whenever u are suppose to declare your major.

at ucla, u pretty much cant switch, unless u got magical powers or something.

have u completed stats and calc? and chemistry/physics?

If you want to do psychology at UCLA you have to apply as a psychology major. But even though sociology is an impacted major I believe you still can switch into that major. I think the ones that will not let you change into the majors are psychology, economics, and communications. But It is rather hard to switch into any major at UCLA.

mojo- im currently taking stats/chem/physics....

so you are saying Berkeley it's easy to change major but UCLA really hard? did you try changing it?

it is DEFINATELY easier to switch majors at berkeley.

You declare your major at berkeley as soon as the fall semester starts. So technically, lets assume that you are a sociology major, and out of nowhere, u decide that you want to be a polisci major. Well, assuming that you already took some courses in polisci, but you arent fully done, you can just go to elco for the summer and just take the remainder of the course requirements and when u get to berkeley in the fall, declare your major. You can do this at berkeley since you are accepted to the college, not to your major.

You cant do that for ucla. You have to be admitted to your major.

torrance....psych is an impacted major at Cal & Soc is not...at least last year it wasn't...not sure about this next academic year...that might help w/ your decision

im not too sure

thx for info. I'm just hoping for Cal..... but i'll apply psych for LA but soc for Cal good idea?

sounds like a plan!

Psych and soc are both pretty impacted, since Cal ranks #2 in the nation for sociology. If u were to want to switch to psych after you're accepted to berkeley, u still have the summer to get the classes required, since you dont declare your major until the fall.

question- what if im not done w/ one class for psych can I still declare my major as psych?

no...........

for berkeley, u have to complete it by the summer.

for ucla, u have to complete it by spring.

All in all, which undergrad psych department is considered to be stronger- UCLA or Cal?

it would be hard to say they are both world renowned

Thats the impression I got after looking at these forums. A lot of people on here put the UC undergrad programs down, saying they are overcrowded and not as prestigious as the other top schools. But I can't help but feel like it should depend on the major. Doesn't it make more sense to go to Cal or UCLA as a psych major than to say, Columbia or Chicago? Please let me know if I am wrong.
