PT school help

I am interested in physical therapy and plan on getting a DPT after my bachelor’s degree. What I don’t know, however, is what I should major in prior to grad school. I’ve heard things like Exercise and Sports Science, Biology, or Kinesiology. My concern though is that if something bad happens or something falls through, any of these degrees would be basically useless in getting a job. I’m looking to get a degree that itself can get me a high paying job, but will also prepare me for physical therapy school. Would anything like biomedical engineering be good? I know it would knock out some of the PT pre reqs and is also a good degree. Thanks for any help or advice!

My daughter is a sophomore and intends to apply to DPT school as well. She considered athletic training but doesn’t want to work with typical athletes. She really wants to work within the field of disability sports, so she is majoring in Exercise Science which allows her a concentration in Disability Sports and the Pre-Health Track (for anyone going on to graduate school like OT or PT). She is actually double majoring in Spanish. I can’t tell if you are already a student or still applying. Either way, make sure you find the time to talk to Chris Hutt. He is the pre-health advisor and very knowledgeable. We met with him when our daughter was applying and he made a huge impact on her final decision to attend Alabama and in choosing her majors.

i didnt even know uab had this…but here is an early acceptance program for pt!!

Trackguy…

It can bre a good idea to have some kind of back-up plan in case you change your mind about PT or any pre-professional track

Since the pre-PT pre-reqs are nearly identical to the Pre-med pre-reqs, there are several options you could do…

You could do what my pre-med son is doing: Chemical & Biological Engineering

or, you could do Computer Science Pre-med track, but add in the Psych and Anatomy/Physiology classes

I see that you qualify for the Presidential scholarship (free tuition) at Bama. If you do choose some kind of engineering or Comp Sci, then Bama would give you an additional $2500 per year.

P56: thanks for that link! My neighbor is a junior & planning on P/T so he’s looking at UT-Chattanooga & Belmont; I’d mentioned UAB but didn’t know about that program so I’ve sent it on to him.

it looks pretty selective robd…ie only 3 accepted but the traditional path would also work…undergrad, then admission into the school of health professions, pt program.
