Ptk

for people that are 'members' of PTK, did you have to apply or where you asked to join? I've consistently had b/w a 3.5-4.0 gpa but I've never gotten any type of invitation... the only reason i'm really interested is b/c i have NO e.c.'s whatsoever and it would be nice to be able to put something down...is it just not available at every cc? I go to Foothill btw.

I guess you need to pay for the membership, which sound like buying e.c. to me. I have got ten serveral invitation before, and I just throw the paper out.

I was invited. I don’t really know what the requirements are, it isn’t listed on the letter, but I have a 3.98 GPA, one honors class (long story) and have had straight A’s since my 2nd semester.

I have no idea how it works. I go to LAPCC. I also have to pay $75.00 =/ but it looks good on the CV.

Phi Theta Kappa is what you make of it. Some people pay just to join and never do anything just so they can list they are a member. If you decide to get actively involved it can be quite rewarding (also depends on your school and how they run Phi Theta Kappa also)

I concur. If you have any questions, PM. I used to be a state officer for PTK.

every CC I think should have at least 1 honor society, either PTK or AGS (alpha gamma sigma). People get invited through word of mouth. There is usually just a 3.0 minimum and a requirement of a certain number of hours if you’re a member.

AGS let me choose between active/inactive, you are required do more hours if you’re active.

My husband is a member of PTK, I was a member of AGS from SMC. He didn’t have to pay anything, he was invited because his GPA is 3.8. From what we understood, you just need a minimum of 3.5 GPA for PTK and 3.0 for AGS, although different schools have different rules I heard.

That just ruins the organization’s credibility.

Yea, those honor societies are a joke, but that doesn’t stop me from sending a check and service hours to AGS each semester to sustain my membership, lol.

I’m a PTK officer and I agree that it is what you make of it. If your chapter is really active it can be a great experience. You can get involved with community service, travel to events, etc.

The requirement is a 3.5 gpa with a minimum of 12 credits earned. Whether or not you get an invitation is going to depend on your chapter. I got an invitation to mine, but at my school you can also join by taking a verification of gpa to the controllers office and paying the dues.

When you enroll you become a member for life and never have to pay any dues again. You have access to scholarships and publishing opportunities. Some 4-year colleges have special transfer programs and grants for ptk members, also.

I’m a member. But I didn’t do anything for it. Then I realized that being a member was completely useless because I was required to provide the # of hours/week while filling out my application. what a waste tsk tsk tsk..
