They will assign you one, but if you want you may contact them and have it changed. For people with shorter last names, your netID will simply be

[first letter of first name][last name]

For those with longer last names, your last name may be cut off. For those with common names -- say, Jane Doe -- they will give you an ID something like:

jdoetwo
jdoethree

Your initial password will be something random, but you can change your password.

that would really suck in my case
c************@princeton.edu
that will be the length of my name, plus it's hella complicated to spell, even for Romanians!!! that's why i never use my name in my e-mail adresses!

yeah Revan, that would be fun. But tunanfish said they shorten long surnames so... I wonder what the maximum # of characters you can have in your email address is...

Checking the netID of a friend of mine with a long last name, it seems to be [initial of first name][first seven letters of last name]@princeton.edu.

If it's the same as someone else, I think that it's [initial of first name][first six letters of last name][numeral order (e.g. 1,2,3)]@princeton.edu, so 8 seems to be the limit.

if you have a legit princeton e-mail, you could easily get a facebook... did you do one of those things where you can make your own e-mail address with whatever ending you want?

Alright! :p

So Anon, tell us the best features of our future email - does it have any special aspects like extra storage space, inter-campus messaging, a filing system like gmail's? What are the perks of an @princeton.edu email?
