does anybody know how many apps are on the waitlist, if waitlist is ranked, or how they select if there are ANY openings? Admissions says not to send anything additional, but does anybody have an opinion as to whether that might make a difference?

I was waitlisted last year. No one got in and, as far as I know, it wasn't ranked.

Did you get waitlisted? Most of the information you requested was in the waitlist letter, so I'm ... perplexed.

The waitlist is not ranked. In previous years, 0, 31, 76, 99, and 0 people got in off the waitlist, respectively (I think those numbers are right. They're approximate at the very least.). The waitlist is no larger than a few hundred people, and it only gets smaller as people opt not to stay on it.

People who got waitlisted have the credentials to be admitted, so they admit waitlisters according to what their class lacks and not so much according to qualifications. If the orchestra were short, say, an oboist, they would admit an oboist. I'm fairly sure this is how it is done.

The letter stated that you didn't have to send in any additional materials, but if there is anything new in your record, I would advise sending it. It can't hurt.

Someone here pulled up the Common Data Set statistics (I haven't looked them up, myself) and they had over a thousand being waitlisted in previous years - although I'd definitely like to think it's more like a few hundred.

That's odd. That's what the letter said. Maybe they meant after people opted not to stay on it.

I've just looked up the CDS 2005-2006 Data for Princeton [link] and indeed, it does say 1207 placed on the waiting list, 794 of whom accepted.

If I recall, the waiting list was drastically smaller many years ago. But it's a little disconcerting. The Princeton waitlist letter gave me a little hope.

3 years ago the waitlist was in the 400s, then, the next year it jumped to over 1000.

Maybe they decided to drop the waitlist this year? I hope so.
