Public Health at Cal

These questions are particularly geared toward those who are actually in the major, but any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm currently an incoming freshman and an intended IB major.

Exactly how impacted and competitive is it to declare Public Health?

What is the annual admissions rate for those who are accepted?

Is it imperative to contact the major advisor as soon as possible to get onto the waitlist? If so, how does that work?

Any help would be great. Go Bears!

I think they changed it so everyone has to apply (so it’s not first-come first-serve anymore). As long as you have strong grades and finish all the lower div prereqs it should not be a problem.

Oh, really?
That’s definitely more encouraging. Can anyone else confirm this?

Thank you!

As soon as you get on campus, schedule an appointment with Tony to plan out your courses and express your interest in the major to him. He will give you suggestions on what to do to improve your chances of getting in. Approximately 1/3 of those who apply each semester is accepted according to him. Therefore, it is even more competitive than Haas.

Just curious, would PH 142 count as part of your science gpa for med school applications? It would go under a statistics course right?

I won’t go as far as saying it’s more competitive than haas since haas is an actual application process (with 2 500 word essays etc) versus filling out a major application but public health is getting tougher to get in since it’s a capped major. my roommate is a ph major and as long as you fulfill your prereqs, write your intent to declare, etc etc, you should be fine. no worries as long as gpa is decent.

5: i should hope so!

i second what olay says. just get a decent gpa (3.2 is enough) in your prereqs and make sure you do a good job on your PS and be nice to Tony ;)

Thanks for the help, guys! I appreciate it. :)
