Public Health Studies

Hey guys,

I've been accepted to JHU already, and have been intending on only majoring in International Studies until recently. I am now very interested in the Public Health Studies major and am thinking of double majoring.

The thing is PHS is arguably largely a science-based major; however, I have dropped all high school science courses. My question is to anyone who knows about PHS well or who has majored in it: what specific science courses are necessary? (I've taken up to Grade 11 Bio but have not taken any chemistry or physic courses) And for those science courses I should have taken but didn't, is there time to catch up/ will i really need to know prior course material?

Thanks!

Here is a link to the degree checklist for public health majors. http://www.advising.jhu.edu/downloads/checklists/PublicHealthMajor.doc

The only “hard science” course you need for the Public Health Studies major is General Biology. You also need to take Biostatistics as a part of the major, but it is not science-based. The PHS major is very flexible and allows you to pursue a biological or social science track depending on your interests.

That’s good to know. Thanks to the both of you!
