I have a few questions regarding public health at UVA. I know that there is the Global Public Health track of the Global Studies interdisciplinary major that requires an application. However, I was wondering if there are other ways to study public health at UVA as an undergrad. Is there a combinations of major(s)/minor(s) that allows students to essentially cover the same classes as a public health major at a different university?
I just wrote back to the email you sent me with these questions. I’ll copy a little bit of it in case others are looking for info.
My sense is that UVA is not in the habit of introducing majors, minors, or concentrations without extensive research into best practices. Is the issue with the name “Global Public Health” or the content of program? Can you have a modern, comprehensive education in Public Health without a global perspective? This is a honest question, as it is not my field of expertise.
As an interdisciplinary program, Global Public Health seems to be what you want – a program that combines work in multiple areas. Is there coursework that present in the Public Health programs you are considering that is not available here? You can see that the faculty in Global Public Health are in the Department of Public Health Sciences, so perhaps the coursework is appropriate for your goal?
@“Dean J” Thanks for the help! I love the Global Public Health program! I was just wondering if there were other options should one not be accepted into the Global Public Health major since it is application-based
I hope to have a career in public health, but figured that out too late to pursue the Global Public Health major (and because I was a transfer student, I had much less time). I’ve taken a combination of classes in Biology, Nursing, Anthropology, and Public Health which I think have set me up well for a relevant career. There’s also a brand new minor in Health & Wellness which may be of interest to you. And you can get help at the Career Center with picking courses that support a future career in public health. So, yes, I think you will have options if you aren’t accepted into Global Public Health.
