Public housing vs Private

So, I've just decided to go here. Next hurdle: picking a place to live.

I don't know much about the housing, so can you answer these questions on some of the dorms?
1) Is it quiet? Are the walls "thick"? I don't want to hear the conversations of my neighbors...
2) Is there good food? Is there a variety of food? This is mainly for private housing, but for public housing, is the local cafeteria OK as well?
3) Do you think it would be a good place for an computer engineer / computer scientist?
4) Is it close to the University quad / Engineering quad?
5) How big are the rooms? Do they ever feel cramped?

Specifically, I'm wondering about these dorms:
PRIVATE:
Hendrick House
Bromley Hall
Illini Tower

PUBLIC:
I really have no clue where to start here. ISR is a possiblity. I might want to avoid the 6-pack because of it's reputation for parties. (Unless I heard incorrectly.) So, if it's relatively close to the quad, can you answer the above questions?

If you can, tell me any comments you have on the housing option you're discussing.

Sorry if it seems I'm asking for you to basically choose a dorm for me. But I want to have a good base of information on the places I might live in. My biggest concern is to go Private or Public. If you have any general comments on that, please tell me as well. =)

i cant answer the first 2 questions cuz im incoming next year too, dont know much about food or wall thickness, but i know some stuff about housing.

to my knowledge, many engineers and cs majors stay in ISR because it is very close to the engineering campus. and yes, you heard right that six pack is highly social and is considered party dorms. it is also pretty far away from the main quad, depending on which hall you get within the six pack. you’ll want to check out a map to see where each dorm is in relation to everything else. know that the engineering quad is on the far north end of the main quad. bromley is like 4 blocks west of the main quad, IT is like 2-3 blocks west, and hendrick is sort of far away in the north east of the campus.

many people choose between public and private based on a) whether they feel they need the amenities/benefits that private housing provides and b) whether they can afford it. but then again, some private houses are not even all that much more expensive than university housing. for example, while IT is roughly $4000 more per year for a standard double/suite, while Bromley could end up being only $300-500 more depending on meal plans and such. you’ll have to look into the individual private houses for more specifics on your own situation and preferences.

good luck!

edit: oh yeah and private dorms are known to be bigger, although not so significantly larger… again depends on the building. i stayed with my friend in the six pack a month ago in a standard double, him and his roommate seemed pretty comfortable. its small, but its also sort of what you expect. you’ll see what i mean.

Thanks for the comment and explaining some of the differences.

I’m hoping some who lived at the dorms, public and/or private, can add their input.

I might go to U of I next year for engineering and I stayed in Hendrick house this weekend. It’s almost exclusively engineers. Also, the west side has slightly bigger rooms than the east side. ISR is also really engineer heavy. I’d say if you want to meet kids who aren’t engineers, don’t stay there.

If you don’t want to go six pack, i’d look into PAR or FAR.

Also, one thing to remember for private housing is that all of it (i think) is first come first serve, so if that’s really what you want, make sure you get in your request fast!

IDK your major, but if you ARE an engineer and want to be surrounded by your kind, go Hendrick House or ISR. I only met one person who wasn’t living in one of those. He got stuck in FAR and hates it because it is so FAR away.

One annoying thing about private housing is you can’t use your meal plans in the dorm cafeterias, so you have fewer options. If that’s important to you.

Yes, I will indeed be an engineer, so I wouldn’t have a problem being surrounded by them.

The “being able to eat at any dorm” thing sounds convenient.
