Public or Private?

So I'm curious... How many of you go to public schools and how many of you go to private? How do you see kids of the other 'type'?

And if you go to public... do you go to a magnet or a charter school?

I, personally, go to a private school. I have nothing against public school kids... as I went to public school in 2nd and 6th grade. I found that the kids were more exclusive and automatically didn't like me because I came from private when I was in public school. I also have found the academics way more challenging at my private school than either of the two public schools I went to.

And the gifted and talented programs are STUPID. We have the exact same programs at my private school that includes everyone, yet in the public school they only include like 20 kids. And it really wasn't even that hard. =/

But in my area... they don't have options or school choice. So... basically you are stuck at your designated school, which is not always a good thing. However, a new charter school is opening up this year for k-5. And That should be promising. The school district refused to fund it though (morons), so they have to go through the state... which means way less money.

I go to a public high school…and its a magnet school.

I go to a public school. My district doesn’t have magnet high schools and most of the charter schools sort of seem to suck. For my school, you have to test in. It’s usually considered better than/equal to all the privates except for one which I couldn’t go to because it’s all-male.

Sometimes, at school, we joke a bit about private school kids being afraid of the city and thinking it’s all the ghetto and if they come here they’ll get shot. But we also spend a lot of time making fun of all of the other publics. We’re both really proud of being public and really proud of not being like the “other” publics.

Almost all of my friends who don’t go to my school go to private schools. A lot of kids at my school went to private elementary and a few left in 8th or 9th grade to go to private. My school is usually the one public seen as at least “equal” to the privates. Eg: last year I did a summer internship and there were a bunch of private school kids, because it was hosted by a private school that year, and then all of the public school kids were from my school. A lot of the other public schools experience"white flight," but not mine.

public magnet. never been to a private school, but publics here in nj are decent.

private school.

Public. Open enrollment.
We’re the most diverse public school in our county. Like Millancad said some schools in our area have experienced white flight, resulting in some schools in our district having a 90% white population while another one is over 40% black… Most of the people I know have been in public schools their whole lives except for a few people who switched from private to public during high school. I don’t have anything against private school kids but at least in our school, they are perceived as elitist.

I go to a regular public high school. There are no charter or magnet schools around here.

Public. Open enrollment, based on where you live. So sort of designated? Idk. I don’t even know what a charter/magnet school is.

We view those who go to privates as forced to do it by their parents mostly. But also that they’re rich. lol. Really though, usually they are… Or that the school was Catholic school. We only have a few private kids here and they only came back to the public school system cos they couldn’t afford private school anymore, or their school was terminated.

My school is quite diverse, but not very academically challenging. It’s not easy though in AP classes.

Personally, I never understood why kids go to private schools. There’s usually just less diversity, more shelteredness, and more competition. Plus IMHO I think it’s better for top students to go to a less economically/competitively sound school than a really good school… but that’s just me-shrug-

I go to a regular public school. But being from Westchester, there are LOTS of private schools around (and many “better” public schools than the one I go to).

I go to public school in westchester, ny as well. We send plenty of kids to top schools.

I go to a big public school. We have no magnets, but a few charter schools around here. There are specific specialized programs scattered throughout the district. There isn’t much of a market for private schools, particularly at the high school level, as the population is small and the oil money keeps the district in good shape. The few private schools are religious in nature and one can find better academics at the publics.

I go to a regular public high school, none of this magnet/charter school stuff.

I agree, the programs for ‘the gifted and talented’, especially here, are completely pointless. Its annoying how these programs only select a few “talented” kids and exclude everyone else.

i go to a regular nyc public high school and yes, many kids go to those prestigious ivys and other private colleges.

I used to go to a private school, where half the classes were in English and half in German (where possible), and I actually liked it there. The curriculum was very difficult, but many people did good.

Now, I go to a public school (I don’t know what charter or magnets schools are), the curriculum is so much easier, yet I don’t do half as good =( (I got lazy)

But yeah, pretty much all my friends view private school kids as stuck-up snobbs.

Public. I went to a magnet school for elementary school and am currently zone-exempted at the most rigorous public school in the area.

We don’t really have private schools up here that can match the level of education at the better publics (with the possible exception of one or two religious schools).

Private. I was in public school up to 9th grade then I switched over to a private school because I wanted a smaller environment. It’s a pretty rigorous school, but I actually think my public high school sent more kids to top 20 colleges. Maybe because there were like 250 kids in my grade in my pubic high school and like 85 in my private school.

I just graduated from a regular public school. We also have some public magnets in the district and several privates that it seems everyone who has (significant) money sends their kids to.

I didn’t mind it. My school offered plenty of APs, was racially diverse, and generally good.

I went to both.
Two years in public, two in private. I never really saw a difference between the two except in the public one…well, everybody wasn’t dressed the same.

public- but i’ve been to both.

I went to a public school all 13 years and all in LAUSD. My elementary school was a charter school.

My school district is currently in debt.
